So, it's a board game that more or less requires a tablet to play. Why then, could they not have simply made the game fully functional on just a tablet to begin with and avoid all the hassle of the physical crap? Seems extremely pointless and inefficient to me.

Because tabletop gamers LIKE having "physical crap" The tablet is just a supplement, just like it was back in the day on games, highly popular games I might add, like Atmosfear
