Well, the G&K expansion was a bit smaller, 780 MB, if that's indication of anything.

Interesting, the AI seems to have improved as opposed to a game I ran yesterday. They are very much more wonder heavy and science heavy. They seem to be putting more priority on science and trade, less on ganging up on the player.
The trading aspect is pretty cool, you get some nifty bonuses from it. They do make the game even easier but at the same time, your buffing up a potentially weak AI by trading with them if you so choose.
The challenge has definately been ramped up, I'm only playing Warlord and I'm getting my butt kicked score wise. Then again, I ain't the best player. I'm only at the industrial era so far.

Europe always gets the games on a friday, while in the US the games are released tuesday. So if you leave in Europe, you will have to wait until friday.

Usual day for german media releases are thursdays... not fridays. half of the games in my library are EU purchased and got released on a tuesday.
the regional restrictions of the release is checked by steam and depends from where you logged in AND NOT WHERE YOU GOT DELIVERED YOUR KEY.

It's worthwhile for an expansion, as it delivers precisely what it is advertised to do, but nothing more and I find some of the changes to be a little annoying. Such as certain wonders limited to social policies or ideolgies.
The World Council/United Nations adds a pretty hefty spin on things but unfortunately like everything else, the AI usually votes against any resolution you try to pass and it ends up failing. More often then not, they pass a resolution that is to the detriment of the player.
I'm beginning to find trade routes annoying, simply because you have to keep renewing the trade route after X amount of turns. This should be done automatically and hopefully they add it in a patch.
Finally, the religion aspect seems to have gotten broken amongst all the other changes. I'm unable to produce Great Prophets nor Missionaries, my religion points just build up. This needs to be patched ASAP because I've got hostile religion in all my cities and I c an do nothing about it.
Despite all these flaws, it's worth the $25 easily. It's rough around the edges but that's pretty much the norm these days. Just don't expect a whole lot of new units or buildings as that's not really the goal of this expansion.

- I agree about the wonders being limited by social policies is a little annoying.
- As for the trade routes, I have to disagree cause I think they're great! I love the fact that you need to strategize and take the right decision when the time for renewal comes, while taking into account the possible cultural or religious influence your trade partner might have on you. I really love this trade system
About your problems with religion, very weird. I'm producing prophets (automatically) and inquisitors/missionaries (manually) without any problems. I even got a late start with religion as I had 0 faith for like the first 30-40 turns, but still managed to catch up and right now I'm about to try to spread my religion to my neighboring city-states. After that I'll take a shot at a couple of neighboring civs
I have to mention that I also like the revamp of the social policies (except for the wonder limiting stuff of course). I like the new added trees and that they separated the political ideologies from that (haven't reached that point yet). And finally I was just starting to catch a glimpse of the Great Works/Tourism system, which looks and sounds very interesting!
For me this is really a great expansion that only makes the game even deeper than it already was |
Oh, I agree, it is a fairly good expansion, along the lines of Gods & Kings but it favors the AI too much. I'm a terrible player, but I shouldn't be getting my ass handed to me at Warlord level.
As for the trade routes, you'll soon find out that if you have a technological edge, then you end up sending tons of science output to the other civ and getting none yourself, which I think is unfair.
As for the prophets and missionaries, I select automatic purchase and then it resets to needing a new goal without purchasing anything. I've got like 4000 faith right now and half my cities are another religion

Well, to be honest I'm only playing on Prince, which would be like the standard difficulty. I will be trying King (hard enough for my modest skills) only after familiarizing with these new introduced mechanics. So far it seems I'm winning but there's still 3 civs I haven't met yet, so we'll see when I charge towards the oceans.
About the trade routes, I'm not focusing on science. I'll be trying to achieve the new cultural victory and so far it appears I'm on the right track, so what you mentioned hasn't affected me negatively (I'm close to reaching the Renaissance).

Uh, yeah you should? If you're indeed "terrible", and especially with new game-changing mechanics in play that you haven't come to grips with yet (which puts the player at an obvious disadvantage over the AI, who's already mastered them as much as the difficulty level allows). If you want an easy win just play with Settler - no harm in playing one game like that as a tutorial of sorts, get a feel for what works and what doesn't.

Is it possible to get the expansion working with a RoW-key and VPN? When I tried it, Steam did download all the files but the game still keeps launching with Gods & Kings on.

If you get the dll file for the second expansion it works regardless of vpn.

That's correct, though I guess the Steam achievements woudln't work without the VPN until release time in your region.

What would be the recommended course of action if I have civ5+gak steam (official) installed. Should I dl and install pirated civ5+gak and then add bnw? Do I need to uninstall the official civ5+gak I have installed now?
