PostPosted: Sat, 29th Jun 2013 20:30    Post subject: Ghost in the Shell: Arise [4 + 2 eps + 1 movie]

Info:
Quote:
- four 50min OVAs (aka straight-to-video anime)
- new continuity (doesn't follow the manga, movies, or TV series)
- "origin" story ("Major" does not work for Section 9 yet.. but that will quickly change)
- animation by Production I.G

- new voice cast
- somewhat different character designs (Major looks weird, everyone else is ok IMO)

Release schedule:
Quote:
First part "Border 1: Ghost Pain" is out
rls name:
Code:
Ghost_in_the_Shell_Arise_[1080p,BluRay,aac,x264]_-_THORA

Second part "Border 2: Ghost Whispers" in 5 months from now (November 30, 2013)

Third & Fourth parts: ??

My mini review:
Quote:
As someone who loved the two movies but couldn't stand to watch more than 3 episodes of the TV series (and I've tried multiple times, believe me!) I am happy to report this feels closer to the movies to me.

Good animation and production values (much better than the first episodes of the TV series I watched but not quite up to film quality).
Pretty awesome fighting scenes.
Ok music.
Ok story (a bit animuuu confusing, probably something lost in the translation as it happens often).

tl;dr If you are familiar with the franchise, it's worth 50mins of your time, go watch it and tell us what you think Smile

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

i hate that it always takes sooooo long with the release of the next OVA. Same with Gundam Unicorn, freaking 6 months between each "episode"

Glad to see that I'm not the only one, was starting to feel uncomfortable. xD

I've never been a fan of the genre and I've always avoided anime movies like the plague (same for games), but I really need to defeat my demons and finally watch these. I'm quite confident that I'll like them. Razz

I get it ixi, Akira and the GITS movies aren't that easy to get into to be honest.

I love them to bits but they're kinda slow and dark, you really have to give it a good chance and maybe you still won't enjoy it since it's dark and kinda slow paced (intentionally). It actually took me three tries to get through Akira, I had to be in the right mood to watch it.

What kind of movies do you prefer watching (non-anime that is)? Pure dumb happy action? Romance? Humor? Adventure? Feel good stuff? More childish stuff? I feel fairly confident I'd be able to recommend a good anime movie suited for your taste. Razz

Time for me to sleep now, just finished three episode of the original The Killing series, was nice. ^^

Very Happy Thanks Yondy, let's say that usually I prefer story-focused as opposed to action-focused stuff, possibly with good characters that you can grow attached to, but nothing too melodramatic and nothing too childish. My favourite genres are probably thriller/action-crime/scifi-cyberpunk but I like other genres as well; if the movie is good, the classification doesn't have much importance after all. Razz

I used to watch anime a lot on TV when I was a kid (Knights of the Zodiac, Captain Tsubasa, G-Gundam, Lupin III, Sanpei, Dragon Ball and others that I can't recall), but strangely as I grew older I began to lose interest to the point that I barely watch Japanese animated productions anymore. I don't know why this happened exactly, it's just that I find the particular style kinda "silly" now (forgive me if the word seems offensive, I don't know how to express it Razz). That's why I feel the need to give them a second chance, and movies like Akira or GitS seem perfect on paper to make me rejoice with this world..so at least I can say "I tried". Obviously if you have more and better suggestions I'm all ears. Very Happy

Go with GitS.

Akira is like a really (REALLY) impressive blockbuster filled with explosions, destruction and violence movie. I wouldn't call it dumb but it's not the writing that will make you stay. It IS a must watch, but leave it for later.

GitS should be accessible to a cyberpunk lover and has both good writing and audio/visuals. It's a really great movie.

I liked both the movies and the series. So this is great news!

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I can also vouch for Monster, it was likely the most mature anime that I've ever watched.

And when I mention mature, I'm not mentioning it in a Berserk like manner of maturity, but rather the themes and exposition of the series, it's a psychological show with convincing and captivating dialogue and believable characters. Nothing to do with super human shows focused on strength, special powers, ghosts/demons or science fiction contraptions. Not that I have anything against the latter, I love Berserk, Death Note and many of the real good animes, but Monster is in its own special niche.

Also, if someone likes Monster, Mushi-shi and Paranoia Agent are also phenomenal!

Should also watch Ergo Proxy, but only if you´re in for a depressing mood Razz

edit :

oh and also, Texhnolyze . Both very good and dark

on the brighter side :

watch Mushishi . It revolves around a doctor whos helping ppl dealing with spirits and stuff. It sounds supernatural but it really isnt the typical type. Should check out at least 1 episode of it Very Happy

I don't watch anything dubbed but the short answer is that since the US licensed BD is not out yet there are JP only releases.

As for the English voice actors, well the Japanese cast selected for this OVA is all new, so who knows who Funimation will choose for the English dub.

Per the thread's updated title the 4 episodes were a success so they decided they will make a movie set in the same universe and 2 more episodes that will bridge the show and the movie.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-02-17/ghost-in-the-shell-arise-broadcast-to-add-2-new-episodes/.85069

Quote:
The Ghost in the Shell: Arise anime series will air on Japanese television under the title Ghost in the Shell Arise: Alternative Architecture, starting in April. The broadcast will recompile the four existing episodes and include two new episodes, to tie the series with the new Ghost in the Shell movie premiering this summer.

Quote:
Series writer Tow Ubukata offered some comments on the new TV airing, saying that Shirow's original Ghost in the Shell manga was "not a classic sleeping in a museum, but a modern work that begged to be adapted for the screen." He stated that the TV airing will take into account the "peculiarities of the TV medium," and will answer "why the Section 9 members were brought together." In regards to the new summer 2015 movie, Ubukata said that it will "deal even more with the past and inner personality of Motoko." He also hopes that "with Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture, I've created a new Ghost in the Shell work that can touch new people, as well as something that old fans of the manga, movies, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex can enjoy."

I still haven't watched past the first episode. Sad

I found the movie on Usenet. But not those episodes? Is there a filename for them?

Like I said go on nyaa. Unless your country hunts down torrents (of a Japanese publisher?? that haven't been licensed by some US/EU company???!) and you don't have a VPN.

Filename is 00001.m2ts as it's a direct rip from the disc.
