So me and my fiancee are flying to London for six days (24th July-30th July)

Any places definitely worth seeing? Museums etc.? Any local beverages worth trying? I'd be thankful for any tips Wink

The first thing you want to do, if you've never been there, is just take an entire day just walking from one sight-seeing spot to another. It's perfectly doable and especially if you have good weather, London's awesome for that Smile

So for the "well known" part of London, here's a guide from a fellow foreigner Razz
Most of these places actually have tube stations; so I'll use those as reference points (open up Google Maps and you'll be able to follow the route below just by looking at tube stations mostly). That's the awesome thing about London, the tube's everywhere. Tip up front: get an Oyster card. Fuck buying tickets; get an Oyster card and enjoy London's public transport the way it's meant to be Very Happy

Hyde Park is always a good spot to start off in, I love Hyde Park Very Happy

From the Hyde tube station walk towards Green Park, cross straight through that to Buckingham. Down Birdcage to Westminster Abbey. Cross the river to the Eye and the south bank; there's always stuff going on on the south bank, although to be fair it's better in the weekends. Cross back over the river towards Embankment, walk up to Charing Cross station and hop inside to find this neat little beer place I forgot the name of that sells better beer than 95% of London (read: "foreign" stuff). By this point you'll have spent a few hours already so you'll want it Razz

Now walk up to Trafalgar Square. From here you can do 2 things; either up through Piccadilly to Oxford if the mrs. wants to get shopping already (Cool Face) or, and this is what I recommend, go up towards Leicester Square. From Leicester Square you can very easily get into all the good parts; the backstreets of Soho, where you'll find a million small little places for food (and most of them are home-cooked, fantastic food). Leicester Square itself (not the station, but the square) has again, lots of little food places around it but more importantly, if it's your thing there's a lot of comedy clubs in this area. Usually only a few pounds to get in. Bit further east is Covent Garden, but to be fair Soho's better Razz

From here just go up to Tottenham Court Rd. and start your endless journey along the billion shops on Oxford. Once you reach Oxford Circus you can go north for Regent Park and Madame Tussauds. Still more to be seen of course, but all of this'll keep you busy for the better part of a day already.

Now, this has to be your thing, but one thing I definitely recommend is Brick Lane fair on the sunday that you're there. Easiest (not the fastest though) is to just get to Liverpool Street Station and head north (heading straight east is faster). Just past Shoreditch High Street take a right onto Bethnal Green road, past Box Park (fantastic burgers to be had on top of this thing!). Don't follow Bethnal, but stick to the right, along the railroad basically. You'll end up at Brick Lane; you kind of want to start at the north end and make your way south. I've come to love this place, the apartment we get to use on our trips to London is right off Brick Lane and the sunday is always good. Again, tons of good food, all cooked right there. Lots of small little stands that have stuff to show and further south down the road you have Brick House - on sundays, that's basically a big hall of nothing but food. And you find pretty much every nationality in there; I've seen Swedish, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Venezuelan, Argentinian and fuck knows what else. You can't go in there and *not* eat something Razz

Also at the north end is a good little coffee place (Brick Lane Coffee, SEAU ORIGINAL) we always get our morning coffee from Razz

There, that'll keep you busy! I'm not one for museums and the likes really, so can't help you much there.

Edit: I've spent too much time there. Didn't even look any of the above up Poker Face

How are dinner prices in London? Barcelona was really cheap, but I assume London isn't. I always heard England was very pricey. I can't stand vacations when I can't eat properly for a decent price Sad

London's expensive if you go to the bigger places or places like the Box Park burger place (well worth it though Razz).

It's in all the backstreets where you find the tiny family places where you'll be able to get good food (and plenty of it) for just a few pounds. Places like Nando's or Chipotle you'll end up paying substantially more. And Brick Lane is just practically free for what you get Very Happy

I also mention this one every time, I know, but Le Relais de Venice is worth every penny. It's 21 quid per person, but it is absolutely worth it if you like a good steak..or two, because you get 2 of them (not at the same time, which is nice! they come back to ask you whether you want the same "rarity" for the second one) Razz

London is terribly expensive when considering shopping, or theater shows, but for the rest it's pretty much the usual European price. Beer was a bit cheaper from over here (3-5 pounds I think for a pint).

I really don't recommend doing any shopping in London. The prices are crazy, and you can get the same clothes in your own country for a lot less. Tell your girlfriend the H&M and Zara are the same everywhere.

I'd quite a bad weather when I've been there. Actually what I enjoyed most was the Tube; You got the whole essence of London right there. Every time we went outside it was freezing cold, so we didn't get to see all that we wanted. I'm not the Museum type, we went to 2 museums - Nature museum was okay, Albert and Victoria was a bit "slower".

+1 for Hyde Park, Green Park for your first day.

Oh, and never pay in Euros. They do like to scam dumb consumers. Crazy differences; where something is 15 GBP...or 24 EUR (true story, H&M) Laughing

So I looked up the Oyster cards, but the whole thing is so confusing that my head hurts. Laughing from what I understand there are a few different oyster cards (normal, visitor and pay as you go) in addition to that, there is a travel card that allows you to move freely for a certain period (day, week, month), but the metro has different zones with different prices Mind Is Full Of Fuck . Now wouldn't that mean that the most reasonable choice would be the 7-day travel card? Help me Paul Crying or Very sad. Or anyone with knowledge of London's tube Laughing

Haha Very Happy

First of all, grab yourself a map of the zones (Google "London Zones"), you'll see what I mean with the shit below. Zones 1+2 are already pretty huge.

So yeah, travel cards allow you to travel freely within whatever zones you bought it for. I doubt you'll go further than zone 2, zone 3 is basically already the "suburbs". I think the only things you may give even a hint of a shit about outside zones 1 and 2 are Wembley + Wimbledon. Can't think of anything else from the top of my head.

As for travel vs. pay-as-you-go (visitor is the same I think, just shipped to you at home before you get there ): depends on how much you want to move around. Trips within the first two zones (off-peak!) are 2.10 I think, peak it's 2.80 cross-zone. So that adds up to a maximum of 7 * 2 * 2.80 = 39.2 over 1 week if you only take 1 trip out and 1 trip back per day Wink

Travel card's much cheaper for any trips longer than 3-4 days Smile

Edit: also note that Oyster cards work on everything. Not just the tube.

Yup.

I'm only 40 minutes away by train and I only ever go down there to fly out of heathrow or when I need to go shopping. That's about it.

Go see Cambridge, Edinburgh, or drive around the country side seeing castles instead.

I live 20 miles from London and commute into Soho daily. London is shit for those of us in my situation, yes, but as a tourist, you can have alot of fun. Us Brits rarely do the tourist thing, and there are some great sights to be seen. The info in this thread seems pretty comprehensive, but do let me know if I can help in any way.

Also, Nando's was mentioned as "expensive" earlier in this thread. It's not, and it's fricking tasty flame grilled chicken. If you've not been to one before, go in and eat there. Make sure you get the peri-salt on the chips!

Have a great trip - hope this heat wave we've got lasts until you arrive!

Also, consider grabbing a train to somewhere like Brighton or Bath for a day trip.

Edinburgh, York and Bath would be high on my list of places to go visit, but as Mchart said, most of the countryside is filled with great places to visit. Personally I think the small villages in the south west are some of the best places the country has to offer.

Nando's is crazy cheap! 1/2 Chicken for £7! The trick is to go for the platters and share Smile. Roulette chicken wings are awesome.

My vote for food in London would be:

- http://www.bodeansbbq.com/ - Awesome american BBQ joint.. I love it because its rare to find over here.
- http://gaylordlondon.com/ - Fantastic Indian.

To be fair, given how much I hate London, I may not be the best person to give advice about what to go see and where to eat there Wink.

Scrap london, rebook your flight closer to the lake districts and go there...

better scenery, can go on horse trails ( hired horses ) and get to see some great areas. hire a car and try out hard knott pass (not for the weak hearted).

visit the lakes, take the ferry to the small island of far sawry and admire all the 500 year old cottages still in use.

get some kendle mint cake and go see beatrix potters house Very Happy

its a better area than that insane place called london lol.
