|
 |
Paul and Pump are gonna love this dearly.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/13/3983594/opera-will-shift-to-webkit-rendering
Quote: | Opera Software has announced that it will move away from its own Presto rendering engine in favor of WebKit, the software engine that powers the Chrome and Safari browsers. "It makes more sense to have our experts working with the open source communities to further improve WebKit and Chromium, rather than developing our own rendering engine further," says CTO Hรฅkon Wium Lie. The company says there will be a "gradual transition" this year to WebKit and Chromium across desktop and mobile.
Details of a WebKit-powered mobile browser from Opera first leaked last month. Dubbed "Ice" at the time, CEO Lars Boilesen was quoted as saying that it was designed to take on Safari and Chrome in the mobile space. A separate WebKit-powered Android browser will be formally revealed at this month's Mobile World Congress.
But the revelation that Opera is planning to adopt WebKit on the desktop, too, marks the end of an era for the Norwegian company, which introduced Presto a decade ago with Opera 7. The announcement was made as the company celebrated reaching the milestone of 300 million monthly users across all its platforms. |

Actually this is great news! I don't like the usability of Chrome but webkit is basically _the_ standard Opera with webkit engine? Sounds great

Having no bookmarks do suck, but you get to learn to live with it...

I personally barely use the regular bookmarks. I always forget about them
I do use Speed Dial though (and the shortcuts for them). I also use the custom searching, Opera Link, built-in torrent client and so on. The most annoying thing about Opera Next is the fact that they split the mail part out; or more specifically, the RSS reader. Brilliantly simplistic and does exactly what it needs to do, unlike most others.
If this is an indication of where they're taking Opera, I'm not sure I'll keep using it. This is just an alpha version, but right now it's lacking most of the things that made Opera my preferred browser

Link, RSS, Speed Dial is only a bastardised version (no shortcuts), no custom search, wand seems to not save things as well as the current Opera does (and this I rely on a LOT, for some sites I have 5 or more logins saved, for clients).
It's basically just Chrome. The font rendering comes from that as well Pumpy. I still don't get why Leo likes it, because Chrome (and Opera Next) turns it into a blurry mess.
Edit: looks like RSS definitely isn't coming back at least, the Mail/RSS split is permanent. Well that's a bummer.

Missing M2, those dumbshits! M2 as a standalone? Might as well just discontinue.

Not with proper fonts and font weights. I like how OS X fonts look. On Ubuntu, though, especially with the limited shit fonts there are, ugh...
Edit: Sorry, they don't with Safari. On my Macs I use Safari and Firefox, not Chrome.

So I installed Opera 15. What the fuck does it give that Chrome doesn't? They even have the same WebKit bugs now.

i will have to use firefox with extensions (feature-wise) but for now i'll stick to opera 12 until the interwebs says otherwise
only two good things i currently see on opera 15 are the improved site compatibility and the chance to use chrome extensions.

Its offically out bitches. Opera 15.00. Download it and join the hipster ranks.
Im kinda afraid to replace the current version. probably best to do a sideways install until the guine pigs report bugs.

Just keep Opera Next installed to see what's coming. It's not there yet feature wise, which is why 12.x users have not been asked to upgrade.

Opera Link, Speed Dial shortcuts, password wand. And make my fucking back/forward on mouse work properly in OS X. Dumbass Chrome doesn't work until you fiddle with it and this is the same. That's what I want before switching

I quite like it
But the last time I used Opera was in about 2000, so what do I know

and now theyre pushing the update on 12.xx users. I did briefly test it and the rendering engine is much faster then the old version. however, the mssing features make it a no go for notihng but casual browsing for me.
