Never pay any attention to PaidArcade "reviews", they're the guys that gave a 5-star review to Real Derping 3 and said that they encountered no pay-wall in several hours of play, despite their video preview clearly showing they used in-game "gold" currency to fast-track all the repairs and upgrades. Paid-off liars is what they are.

Hmmm I think the cons are outweighing the pros here, the only pro being 'X-Com on iPad!' lol.

I have an iPad 3 and iPhone 5 so maybe a skippety skip and stick to the PS3 version.

May the NFOrce be with you always.

Well the IPA is out now but, as always, uploaded to "premium" filehosts. Oh I'm sure you could get it as a free user, as a whole 17-40KB/s and maybe, just maybe, the network wouldn't mysteriously drop the connection a few times Laughing

Still, XCOM on iPad Very Happy

Edit: urrgh touch arcade:

"As for a "port report" since everyone's asking about how it performs on various devices: we're pretty pleased with the game's performance on iPad mini, iPhone 5, and iPad 4. Smooth framerates and everything. The installed game takes up about 3.5 GBs of space, so clear some room."

They're so full of shit. 'Intermittent smooth frame rates' at best. Their own forum is FULL of people having issues.

I thought most knew by now that Toucharcade is one of the worst of the worst when it comes to them being bought out by their sponsors, and their reviews in general are rated too high. You can't trust that site worth shit.

I'm hoping they release a demo version so I can try it on my iPhone 5. I still suspect that the iPhone 5 will have the best performance.

All of that being said, it's obvious the game was developed in preparation for the new iDevices coming out in a couple months.

I bet it runs OK. iPad 3 is the one that would be fucked given that it's higher res but has lacking hardware.

I'm with Mchart on this, I think of ALL the devices; iPad2/Mini might actually be the better one to play it on, simply for the half-resolution screen. I'll give it a go later if I can find a decent host.

More proof TA can't be trusted;

The game is rocking a 90% on Metacritic, the port is great. I don't need to do a 100 hour playthrough to strongly recommend it.

Both Eli and Brad are shameless shills of the publishers. There's nothing "great" about this port, everything from terribly cut down visuals to horrible performance across the board. I'm about to install on iPad 2 now, see if the half-res helps, but I'm not holding my breath.

Right off the bat, the loading times are abysmal - especially the "to title screen" initial load, which is masked by an irritating cinematic that is unskippable until the game is loaded. Loading into game is also bad but not as long as the initial load. Textures are pretty bad, we knew this already, and the game is missing pretty much any and all special effects -- no shadows, no specular highlights, no shader effects of any kind, it's all cheap sprites and even the explosions don't show half the time. It's aliased up the ass too, I'm afraid.

..................All that could be excused and accepted, especially if you've never played the game before, the core gameplay is fully intact and I can see this given dozens of hours great enjoyment to many people. But. The performance is downright shocking, considering the size of the visual downgrade this is absolutely unacceptable, without an OSD it's hard to give an EXACT count, but it's definitely in the 12-20 area - sometimes lower during "cinematic cam" modes, you can physically see everything slow and stagger to a crawl when the camera zooms in to show a shot on an x-ray. It's bad and it's pointless and no way is this what the hardware is capable of. The framerate also causes some lag issues, with commands sometimes not registering and with delayed input, especially on any slide-commands such as camera panning/zooming/rotating.

Screens are absolutely no different, resolution aside, to iPad3/iPad4/iPhone 5.

All in all, I would have to say skip this for $20. If they developers put more time and effort into optimising this for the hardware - because it most certainly is capable of more than what they're showing, you only have to look at iPad native titles to see, even/especially stuff from Gameloft - then it would be worth the money. A few maps aside, this is supposedly the complete PC/Console experience and the gameplay is still the same. It's fun and engaging and would definitely be worth owning --- if only the performance and worryingly poor visuals didn't hold it back so much. As it stands, for $20 you can get the far far superior PC version.

Most people own the PC version for free anyways as has been bundled free with a bunch of games.

Aye, but to people that don't have the PC one (sadly, I'm one Sad) it would be the version I strongly recommend. It's either the same price or it's cheaper, depending where you shop, and is by far the superior one. If the devs can improve the performance on the iPad version it would be a nice choice, but for now? egh...

Average framerate would be around 17-20, it chugged and dropped down to 12ish when zooming in for cinematic shots. Hell, if anything I expect it would be worse on other machines - with a lot more stuttering and freezing. The visuals are the same on iPad as they are on iPad 4, only the iPad 2 isn't pushing Retina like the 3 and 4 are.

20 $ for this?! I've seen smoother frames and better looking textures on iPad1/PSP games. Laughing

Ughh... what a fucking disappointment! Sad

The iPad series are capable of a lot more than this, so I really don't understand what went wrong. Oh well, perhaps Gameloft will release their own version? Wink There's always this in the meantime;

Haha I, unfortunately, made the mistake of discussing the game on TA's forum, I said that the framerate is poor and the overall performance is unpleasant. This didn't go down too well with the "runs fine for me, must be your jailbreak" crowd Laughing Fucking morons. I'm growing rather tired of dealing with people that have such genetic abnormalities that prevent them from telling the difference between 15fps and 60fps.

So uhhh, put down ya' pitchforks, but I've never played an XCOM game.. does this title have any multiplayer? ;p

I do enjoy turn based tactical mp with some of my buddys. Right now we only really have RAD Soldiers though. This looks badass but don't have time for just a single player game. Sad

No multiplayer yet though the developers said they're trying to work something out for a later date -- either way, the series has always been primarily an SP title so you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice not playing it Smile

Yah I hear ya, this is the first time in my life where I don't have enough time for games. I've never had to juggle my spare time like this before, haha. New job is kicking my ass, new girlfriend, too many games to play.

Haha, no doubt! Well - if and when you do get some free time, the SP campaign of XCOM is excellent and very expansive.

IMO you are shooting yourself in the foot by just not playing this game on the PC.

Then while playing it remembering how much better the first game was and just going back to play it instead. Laughing
