Fuck it, i'm pre ordering the PS4 for £20. The only chance of getting one on release day here in the UK. And if you don't like the price you get your £20 deposit back, can't say fairer than that.
They are streaming it via the powerrrrrrr of the Wii-U

Saner is not being serious. Unless its the subject of Santa!

It's listed at £349 on amazon, but that could be subject to change right? That's why I thought the £20 deposit was a more favorable option than laying down an actual preorder via Amazon.
No no, £349 is the final retail price on the console itself. It's only the games that haven't yet had their price structure confirmed. PS4 is £349/€399/$399.
While I don't like the policies microsoft is adopting with the xbox one, and hope they get fucked because of those decisions, this whole bashing of the console for the sake of it is getting really tiresome and starts to feel like some fanboy-herding propaganda.
In the context of that propaganda image, what constitutes "better technology" ?! Is that notion based on the fucking 8GB of DDR5?! The hypothetical slightly better GPU? All of this is theoretical until these system are out an there are games to test them.
And what relevance does the size of these machines has on whether or not they're good/reliable machines? The difference between them is what? A few inches? Both of them are smaller than any of their predecessors ffs. Is the smallest machine somehow guaranteed to be the best? By that standard the Wii should have been the best console of the 3 in the last gen.
This reminds me of the last gen and the PS3 vs x360, and boy oh boy how that turned out in the long run!
ps4 has better specs
xo has almost equal specs with the rest going with the added power of the cloud
so the cloud will make xo as equal as ps4 for years to come.
so that's a 100 dollar difference for internet based computing that worked so well for sim city, diablo 3, and a few other games. It does work. Cloud based computing it a great thing. But it isn't reliable.
XO wont be great from the start. it'll get there in a few years.
So yeah... PS4 is the better console that doesn't rely on internet connectivity.
The XO needs to cloud to be as powerful if not more so than the ps4.
W/o internet XO is, spec wise, weaker.
also size matters. if you have place to put it. the ps4 is small. it can go anywhere and not distract you. xo isn't small. journos have commented at how big it is.
smaller size the less space you're using. people want to use less space on their entertainment set up. to make it look neat. presentable.
Waldo, stop making such a damn fool of yourself. That cloud compute is a myth. SimCity doesn't use it, and what Diablo did with it is extremely minor. The latency is just too big. Anything that needs to happen in real-time or near that can't be done in the cloud. That rules oh graphics, physics, audio. What's left is stuff that already is done online anyway. It does not make the tvtvtvtvtvtvtv anymore powerful - and if you want to be realistic: PS4 and PC use it too.
I know that. But that's how it's advertised. That's why the infinite power of the cloud can achieve greater power over the ps4. That's how EA advertised it. That's how MS is advertising it. I'm just saying what they're saying.
On paper ps4 is better in specs.
In theory (if cloud turns out to actually do something) xo and ps4 will be identical.
Although I bet you, just like EA did with Sim City... MS is testing the infinite power of the cloud on a closed lan to get that near 0 ping data feed back. That's why it works for them. That's why it worked for polygon and their sim city pre-release play through.
In the real world... it's going to bomb just like Sim City.
They already showed a working implementation of cloud computing at the E3 and in interviews.
It was the Forza "Drivatar"
Its a low-latency neural network, an AI learning algorithm that lives in the cloud.
Those things could evolve further - AI agents communicating with each other - and see uses in a variety of other genres.
Most importantly, once the cloud-based AI is "imprinted" with all the learning memories it could be extracted, copied and used in non-cloud applications too.
Not many people understood the possible implications when it was presented. (and still don't - they make only fun of it)
As much as I could agree about games being the final (and only one really important) test, there's nothing hypothetical about PS4's GPU. It's practically confirmed it has 18 compute units versus Xbone's 12. We don't know the clocks, but everything suggests they are either the same, or PS4 has a slight advantage. Not to mention Microsoft's machine seems to have a lot more resources reserved for the OS(es).
To be honest, the best proof of PS4's hardware advantage is Microsoft's silence when it comes to details of new Xbox's specs. Instead of being open about them, like Sony is now about their console, they are still hiding behind mythical "power of the cloud" - something that, while useful, is also very situational and pretty unlikely to be widely used by 3rd party devs.
So, all in all, I really don't think it's like in the current generation. It's not a slight advantage, hardware-wise, it's a real, visible gap, around 50% wide - and to make things worse for Xbone, it also seems to be more complicated to program for.
The difference might not be visible right away, but when time will pass and devs will be forced to squeeze more and more power out of those poor boxes, it'll will start to stand out and compromises will have to be made. Bigger ones every year.

drivatar is just downloading suggested ghost tracks. so it's not constant / instant it downloads the data while the map loads and then you play. it pre-loads it.

it wouldn't work live.
If its like that then its less sophisticated than I thought.
But its possible it records the player ghost/behaviour and then uploads the whole package after a race to analyze it and run simulations of its own, that could be something.
Yet it also seems the devs were using such technology since ages and employed a Drivatar back in Forza 2 (2007 lol!).
I guess they ran the simulations on their own networks though.
I hope this is not just a ploy and they truly take it to the next level .
They'll have hundreds of thousands of player behaviour profiles and a cloud ecosystem then, there will be way more data than ever before.
They definitely need to ramp up the complexity
At least its a beginning and the idea could be fantastic if done right, very farsighted
There should also be no technological barriers that impede further progress - the servers will only get faster and more numerous with time.
And its nothing exclusive to MS in the future, although they have the edge now.
While at Microsoft for a meeting, Misty Silver saw and overheard some employees on Reddit. She looked at one of the employee's screens:
"I noticed he was mass-downvoting a ton of posts and comments, and he kept switching to other tabs to make posts and comments of his own. I couldn't make out exactly what he was posting, but I presumed he was doing RM (reputation management) and asked my boss about it later. According to my boss, MS have[sic] just brought in a huge sweep of SMM managers to handle reputation management for the Xbox One," Silver reported.
"Reputation management" is the term social media marketers use to "pose as happy customers" on social media sites. They upvote/downvote and make comments.
In the last year or so, Reddit has become a prime target for reputation management, Misty Silver says.
BusinessInsider contacted Microsoft regarding this rumor and of course M$ claims they have no knowledge of it happening, but since this 'mistysilver' appeared Reddit ended up with their own shitstorm and as such had to remove her post and provided this update regarding the rumors:
Quote:
Microsoft told us, "There is no coordinated or sanctioned effort by Microsoft employees, or anyone paid by Microsoft, to unduly influence Reddit or other online forums."
Shortly after, the content of Misty Silver's post was removed, but the comment string on the post is still there (and it's hilarious).
We reached out to the moderators and asked why it was taken down. Redditor airmandan, the moderator from the /r/gaming subreddit, told us:
"We have not been contacted by anyone at Microsoft. The post that was removed consisted entirely of speculation and unfounded allegations. There is no rule against posting such in /r/gaming. However, the result of the post has been a completely out-of-control freight train of people posting personal information (in violation of Reddit rule 3) and engaging in vote manipulation (in violation of Reddit rule 2). If our users need to have a session of two-minutes'-hate, they will have to do it in a way that doesn't violate two of reddit's five only rules at the same time."

True, that's how they advertise it.

But no. Not even in theory could the cloud replace the lack of memory bandwidth, cover for the 50% extra shader power or the (likely) higher clockspeeds on the PS4.

Again, Waldo, Sim City does not use the cloud. People have been playing it completely off-line for a while now.
What "the cloud" could be used for is indeed post-game statistics and analysis. That does not have to be real-time. The reason I'm using quotes is because everything already does use the fucking cloud. Where the fuck do you think your achievements go? That's right, the cloud.
The cloud has been around for a decade and a half. Practically every game uses it in one way or another; BF3 for example uses it a lot, as all of Battlelog and its statistics run separate from the game. The game sends its data to the cloud to be analysed. The cloud is nothing more than a bunch of servers.
It's a buzzword these days and one I've come to hate, because every single client now goes "WE WANT OUR SITE TO BE HOSTED IN TEH CLOUD HURRRR". Meanwhile, they have no idea what they actually mean.
And again, it's piss easy for Sony to do the exact same thing. The cloud will not, in a million years, give the tvtvtvtvtvtvtvtv any extra capabilities. The console itself will stay the limited piece of crap it already is. The only thing developers can do with it, is off-load time-insensitive long-running tasks that do not affect your game directly. Analysis of your in-game behaviour and then adapt to it, yes. But that's not new and if anything, the big developers won't use MS' overpriced cloud (because make no mistake, use of that will not be free) but rather their own existing cloud.
Unless they somehow learned to do magic and fixed the latency and bandwidth problems, the cloud is only good for statistics and possibly some longterm stuff - something that doesn't change dynamically while you play. This seriously limits its usefulness - more or less to what we already have today, though perhaps there'll be some creative new uses, like the Drivatar. But there's absolutely no way it can close a big hardware gap, no way in hell. It's just marketing talk, nothing more.
