This workaround was uploaded by a youtube user a couple of days ago. SimCity-DRMLESS-Beta-1.0. There's a 1.2 version but there's an issue with it finding the EA Root Certificate. V1.0 works perfectly fine for me. Only One region and 3 lots to pick from though, but it's a start.
I'm willing to bet this "3DM" is this guys work.

The install data file fetched from the apache server is only 1.71gb, and the Origin Games\SimCity folder is only 2.33gb. Whereas the Origin-rip that's been floating around forever is 3.8gb. Obviously there's something missing.

There were lots of people with issues on Win8, before youtube pulled the video, links and all comments. If you are using the v1.0 (with the red "Continue" button), it hangs but the server is still running and the game installs and works. I couldn't get v1.2 working on Win7 x64 and others has similar issues with both Win7 x64 and Win8, mostly related to the EA Root Certificate not showing as installed.

The v1.2 you dont install the cert as he showed in the vid, as that only worked for 1.0 afaik. Just install the cert to default with the start.exe loaded, then get it to check again and worked perfectly when i did it that way.
NB: Win7x64 with no problems other that what i posted above after playing for aq fair bit.

@MadK9 Where does the certificate install to by default in Windows 7?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/view-or-manage-your-certificates
Edit: nvm, just realised I have a virtual machine set up. It installs to 'Intermediate Certificate Authority'. Doesn't help with Win 8 though.

So, on Windows 7, even with v1.2 and having the certificate installed, I still get an error about the 'dummy certificate does not seem to be installed' in the server tool, but the game starts and works fine. So I guess the problem is something to do with the server tool or the game in Windows 8.

Would be nice to get full server functionality from the emu, meaning i could host for friends and they just need to connect to my ip instead of to their local one.

So? Pretty sure it will be fixed, it is a beta after all. A few days ago we did not have even that kind of functionality.

I'm glad to see that something is finally moving. Honestly I don't even know if I'll play it if/when the full working version will be released since it sounds like something that will never rival the modded SC4.
But I'm sure as hell looking forward to seeing some genuine drama in the near future!

at the install origin part can you just launch the exisiting origin I have or reinstall the one with it?
Edit i did everything per letter, and i get cert not installed and origin says must be online first time it starts. Tried the place the video showed and the default
