@ Interinactive: the guy had his hand in bits of UE3 amongst others and he certainly was a brilliant man, but the Rift has been gaining so much momentum lately that I don't think it'll suffer from this loss. They've attracted so many great minds now.

To continue on this a bit further btw, I knew he used to work at Scaleform - launched it in fact (which is what my comment above was based on). For those that don't know, Scaleform is in pretty much every major title nowadays. That HUD you're looking at? That's Scaleform. Crysis, Battlefield 3 and most UE3 titles all rely on Scaleform's technology to do their HUD.

What I didn't know is that he apparently also worked at Gaikai until he started on the Rift. So that's the kind of developer he was. I'm guessing that he's largely responsible for the Rift being implemented so relatively quickly everywhere.

Shows pretty well how it all works.

The only thing I could think of whilst watching that video was playing an Elder Scrolls game, where you level up by "doing", i.e. levelling up athletics by running. I'd like to see someone attempt that Very Happy

Whoa. Already more than double their goal on the first day. After seeing how goofy you look on this thing I'm actually really surprised by how well it's doing. But, hell, I guess you're already going to look goofy wearing the Rift (and holding a Hydra) so you might as well go all out. I'm getting my Rift in a few weeks and I'd love to give this a shot, but I'm definitely not willing to pay for it without trying it first. Also, from some of the videos it looks extremely loud. I'm not sure if that would fly in my third story apartment.

HAHA! Too right Very Happy Besides, it's in the comfort of your own home -- so fuck it, who cares what you look like, right? Very Happy I also second your opinion about how loud it sounds, in their KS pitch they said it sounds "no louder than a normal treadmill" .... and have you heard how loud those are? They ain't whisper quiet by any stretch of the imagination. This one doesn't have mechanics or machinery, true, but you are still running on a plastic/wood base which I presume would lead to some unpleasant thuds for downstairs neighbours.

So, that's Source (and thus Source 2 most likely once that comes), Frostbite and UE4 with support available at little to no cost.

I received mine on tuesday.
The screen is truly horrible.
I was expecting low resolution but the screen door effect is just murder.
I actually did a really simple hack to improve the quality with great results:
http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=140&t=17927

Apart from the poor screen, this thing is pretty damn awesome.
I tried a few games with the vireio driver and they're not really that playable at all.
I imagine the only retrofitted games that work out will be driving games and flying sims.
Mouse & keyboard control is useless.
Xbox controller is better, but still awkward.
Razer hydra however, when hands are properly implemented ingame, is fucking amazing.
It's slightly laggy, but it's hard to describe how natural it feels when i can pick up items and play with them.
Unfortunately there's essentially only the tuscany hydra demo that does this properly.
I recorded some of my test session on youtube:

The surgeon simulator got a rift/hydra patch last night so I tried that.
It's cool, but the hydra implementation is really half-assed.
My arms are like 10cm long!
The Gallery tutorial level is due later this month so I'm looking forward to that.
Until then, I hope to do a project of my own.
