Hey guys,
i have a weird problem with a mechanical HD acting up. Playing games on it makes them stop for several seconds until the disc reloads or something but SMART says everything is alright. Beeing the weasel i am,i copied everything crucial away from the disc and during that process, speed went up and down like a rollercoaster (60mb to 2,1kb and up to 60 again). It`s really weird and i am not sure if its going kaputt or if format and re-partitioning would maybe fix the issue. Anyone got an idea on how to solve this or see if its dying of old age already?
sorry for the weird text,i didn`t sleep yet

I usually use Ultimate Boot CD, I load up a tool that I like from there, don't rememmber its name now. That's a solid fucking way to check a disk.

That can also mean a bad data cable, try replacing it.

Yes and if it still acts up (only do one change at a time and test), then also try one of the other cables from your power supply.

well,i`ll test the cable next because formating seems to stop mid-process and just sits there
edit: changed cable, formating didn´t have percentage display before,it has now. fingers crossed,i hope the problem will be gone so i can drag all that ̶a̶̶n̶̶i̶̶m̶̶a̶̶l̶̶p̶̶o̶ work related stuff back on it
how the hell did i screw up a single SATA cable

I'm kinda late but one other very common reason for this, is when you have multiple drives. One drive goes in sleep mode and then suddenly Windows (or another piece of software) decides to check the drive (anti-virus perhaps) causing the drive to wake up. This causes the exact issue you're describing - Windows will suddenly freeze for a few seconds until the drive has come out of sleep mode. This used to cause my games to freeze for a moment as well and in the end, I turned increased the sleep time for all my drives to 3 hours to prevent this.
