So, my gf and I decided to vacation in Croatia this summer.
However since we don't have a shitload of monies I'm wondering if any Croatians here could help a whitey out? D:

For example, how much does local traffic cost (buses and stuff) and is it possible to get from the airport into split city by bus? ^_^

Would appreciate any useful info about Split as well. grinhurt

I would like to add, will you get by speaking English in Croatia, or is it like France where people knee you in the balls for saying "Excuse me?

Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.

People 30+ don't speak any English because during the socialistic dictatorship (that lasted until 20 years ago), English wasn't taught in school.

what to say here, close minded?, i'm 35y "old" from croatia Smile, so i can tell you some nice just learned english words, go fuck yourself, or some words on croatian, nabim te nakurac. And i learned english from tv/games as child, so in your face!! In these days with facebook, internet , media, movies, only really retards dont speak english.

@Prefetian

when you arrive avoid taxi services as much as you can, when they see strangers you can see signs of dollars spinning in their eyes, yes, you can take bus from airport, here's the email and phone numbers if you need any more information.

+385-21-203-119 split@plesoprijevoz.hr,

here is the bus shedule
http://www.plesoprijevoz.hr/split.html

bus ticket costs 4-6 euros, while taxi can charge you up to 20-30 euros for same distance.

have a nice journey and enjoy split Smile

First of all dump the girl and find yourself another one is Split by saying "mala jebaću te u guzicu!".

Pretty much everyone knows English, not sure about Split I only passed by there but I'm sure most people know a few words Very Happy

Sadly the public transportation in Zagreb has like one of the highest prices in Europe (due to corruption of course, yeah even our public transport is corrupted Laughing ), don't know about Split, taxi's got cheaper though now that there is competition (see if I give fuck I ride my bicycle anyway).

Split is awesome city ^^ I was there for a week two years ago, with bikes, and it was one of the best vacations I've had Very Happy

If you need cheap but really great accommodation, I recomend Hostel Split Wine Garden:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hostel-Split-Wine-Garden/197233240404550

I don't know how is their business now, but when I was there it was awesome Smile

Plus you can make loads of trips, for instance you can go to island Vis, and from there you can go to see Modra špilja (blue cave), I was there in Komiža, with tents for one night, in an 'illegal camp that doesn't exist' xD

It was really cool minus the annoying trance music from the club all night (didn't get any sleep :\).

There is loads to see in Split itself, you can even rent bikes in Marijan, and drive around, great beaches (Bačvice, Bene, Žnjan...).

And I remember seeing drunk English ppl every night, and I never found out from where did they come from and where did they go! But they looked like they had great time and were going to some parties :\

Also if you're into partying this summer there will be some big dj event there:

There is bunch of local cuisine. If you were going with a car, you could try Janjetinu na žaru (roasted lamb) along the old roads Very Happy

We're kinda famous for that xD

Ultra Music Festival Europe is in Split, Croatia this summer.. I believe.

so if you plan on going there at the same time - dont miss it! (unless you hate EDM - then.. its not for u I guess;) Very Happy

and IF you decide to go and not go becuz of UMF - dont go at the same time/weekend as accomodation will probably be hard to come by and definitely alot more expensive those days...

Every time I read the title of this thread I think it's about Croatia being split up into two countries. I have Serbian and Bosnian friends/acquaintances that moved here during the Yugoslavian war and resulting split telling me horrible stories from both sides. And now Croatia???

Then I remember from reading the thread before someone is going on vacation to a Croatian city with the name Split... Razz

I wonder if Greece and Macedonia will ever come to terms over the name Macedonia. I wonder if Kosovo will join Albania etc... It will take a long time for the balkans to settle.

Hey it took me a long time until I realized that banana split wasn't made after the city Split, but rather about the splitting the banana in half :v

By the way, I've got a question about water.
My GF was saying that we'll need to spend money on buying bottled water there while I'm not quite sure we'll need to do that and will just be able to drink regular tap-water.
I know that back in Poland drinking the tap-water was a fucking stupid idea since they used chlorine to filter the water with, how is it in Croatia?

I'm not entirely sure why drinking chlorine filtered water is such a stupid idea considering thats how most of worlds tap water is filtered, but yes it's chlorine filtered. And yes everyone drinks it. If you want better tasting water you buy the bottled ones. You certainly won't die from drinking tap water a couple of weeks.

What's the problem with chlorine filtered water? Just pour a glass and leave it for 30 seconds, don't drink right out of tap

Our water is tappable grinhurt

Laughing

But seriously, you can drink it just fine. And the bottled water tastes the same, since it's basically tap water in a bottle Laughing

Alright?
Well, drinking chlorine isn't a good idea....usually gives you a tummy-ache.

Anyway, good to know that it's perfectly drinkable. Very Happy
