guess both consoles will be hacked more quickly this time, closer to pc, with x86 architecture and all
but it wont help much if in 2015 80% of the games will have such extensive online features that pure offline games will be the minority by then.
I also guess the always-on decision will be left to the publishers and some of them are gonna choose this path.
even SP only games will be plastered with additional online functionalities, most of which are probably useless and annoying (just as they are now) but there will always be the odd feature that actually adds to the experience

oh you mean like integrate more crapbook into games that i honestly don't give a damn about? (life without facebook is so peacefull)
sigh i guess games are going towards how much share with social media can we cram into the game instead of actually making a great game luckily lately there's been a ton of good kickstarters / indie games starting to rise for the next years to come

Would be extremely funny to see the PS4 winning that race this time.

that is true the PS2/PS1 was the NUMBER ONE console because of PIRACY , PSP is STILL the NUMBER ONE portable console for piracy when its hacked your psp turns into a game center for all amiga/sne./nes/gen/etc games and video player even a PHONE with hacked skype
Vita [psp2] and 3Ds [GameBoy 5] lose every day on sales WHY ??? no piracy
console makers are dependent on piracy

+1 @ rgb#000. The only reason the 3DS sells is because it has exclusive nintendo games, same for Sony with the Vita and games like Uncharted.
People that wanna play Mario land, NSMB 2, or Zelda have no choice than to buy a dedicated nintendo system. Sure these days you can use emulator on phones though, but you wont be able to play anything newer than the N64 (i know Android has a DS emulator now though).

I wouldn't call those games, just slightly enjoyable 1$ time wasters. I can play for hrs on my PSP/NDS, proper games, with proper buttons and gameplay mechanics. I don't think I've ever played more than 2 hrs on my phone/iPad.
And ever since I've got these 2 handhelds I haven't touched a single game on my phone/tablet or looked into/downloaded one from the app store.
The 3DS and the VITA are loosing because there are NO GOD DAMN GAMES on those systems. There's like 5 decent games for each planned for release this year.
There's nothing to play on those things so why on earth would anyone get one let alone pay 150-200 euros for one?!
And that's a damn shame especially for the vita, witch is a great system -- the first handheld with 2 analogs -- that you can't take advantage of.
If you want a viable handheld console just get a PSP/NDS as they're very cheap (you can get them both for less then a VITA or 3DS) and they have a decent backlog of great games. UMDs and NDS cards are very cheap too and not that hard to come by, or just hack them and you're good to go with custom software as well.

3ds right now is the best handheld device. It's selling well. It has, as many have pit it, the strongest available catalogue. But if you're picky gamer whose stuck in 3d platforming fps adventure genres w/o experiencing the plethora of gold 3ds has to offer, then yes... Pc/360/psx/ps2/ps3/Xbox/all Nintendo consoles have no games.
3ds is doing just fine. Hardware share for 3ds is growing. Great games coming out this year.
Vita is dying.
Vita is against smart phones.
3ds isn't.

no but I agree 3DS is doing fine. But smartphones aren't helping either, that's for sure. But WaldoJ you are just repeating indirectly what I had been saying :
why is the 3DS doing fine now (while it didnt at first) ? Well because this is the only way people can play Nintendo franchises like Mario, Zelda etc. They dont have it on smartphones. The PS Vita doesn't have enough Sony exclusives or major Sony games and thus fail. Also, people aren't interested in playing a living room game in a handheld.
Which is also why the 3DS is doing a lot better than the Vita : people can just play Mario for 10min, just stop, like angry bird. Uncharted or God of War (i know it doesnt exist on Vita but you see my point), they can't.
Sony is failing because just like the PSP, they are just porting living room games to handhelds and people don't wanna play this. That's also why Sony is trying hard to get more & more indie games to the Vita, because they finally noticed that bringing Uncharted to their console isn't the only thing they had to do.
No remove all Nintendo games from the 3DS, and people wouldn't give a shit about it.. People don't care about the 3D effects, etc, people only care about its games, and most of the amazing ones are ... nintendo exclusives... which are always great for portable stuff.

don't know if you are ignorant on purpose, but times where phone games were all like angry birds are long gone. now we have console quality rpgs that are 10s of hours long, for example chaos rings, driving games that look and play amazing (real racing 3), many great adventure games, and so on.
so yeah, you are either out of the loop of what's happening in mobile gaming, or you are just ignorant. that's exactly why vita/3ds also don't sell as much as companies anticipated. because they were ignorant about mobile gaming and got taught a painful and costly lesson.

I'm really curious to see if/when/how these new consoles will be hacked.
On one hand, the x86 architecture might make a hardware hack easier, simply because more people are familiar with it.
On the other hand, I doubt they will repeat obvious mistakes that they made in this generation (ie: the x360 dvd drive that doesn't require its firmware to be signed, no way that's gonna happen again, unless they really want it to get hacked).

I really don't understand why they didn't fix that, couldn't they just have added signing in the new models? especially in the 360 slim since they had to remodel the mainboard/drive pcb anyways?
Drive hacking was a godsend, if something like this happens again next gen, even always on wouldn't be a problem. Even if you get banned every 1-2 years, I would gladly sell the banned one and buy a new one and hack it again instead of starting to buy all those games

not at all.
there are no more exclusives coming for 360.
there are 1-2 exclusives coming for ps3, but all that before ps4 launch.
3rd party game companies will stop supporting ps3/360 relatively fast too, by this time next year there won't be any major games coming out for ps3/360, except some shitty annual sports games and other irrelevant crap.
and most importantly who would want to play outdated shitty looking low fps version on ps3/360, when shiny new ps4/xbox next version is out? only pirates probably.
remember just cause on 360 and xbox1? | Just think about all the people who own a 360, and besides think of all the people still playing on the PS2 (I know it just got unsupported, but that was about time!) And I don't really care about the exclusives when it comes to piracy, ill probably buy the new PS4 and xbox, but will get the same game for 360 if its available... obvisouly because its free and available faster
No need to be cocky, you don't have any proof of what you're saying is true. I think there will be quite a lot of games available for both the PS3 and 360 at least 3-4 years to come. I could of course be wrong, but time will tell. I wouldn't really care that much if the 360 died out and i had to buy PS4 games, then id just get the best ones and play less

Yes, the phone/table have fantastic games! I should throw away my all my other proper gameing devices in favor of those, because surely there are better games on the iOS/Android.
Driving games that look and play amazing?! On a damn touchscreen?!?! Man, you clearly haven't tasted the proper point of reference of those games!
Real Racing 3? Try PGR, Forza, GT, Grid, DiRT...
Chaos Rings?! Try Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, Resonance of Fate...
What's next? NOVA is the best FPS on the planet, as it looks and plays amazing...?
It's a sea of garbage in the mobile gaming dept and even the best and brightest wouldn't score any higher than average when put side by side with proper console/PC games. With a handful of exceptions (SuperBrothers and Year Walk are probably my fav) there's nothing but poor mans clones out there and f2p trash that just won't go away. But we are aren't talking about those 10 games designed for the touch screen, we're talking about conventional games that emulate buttons/proper inputs and are being better or just as good as the real thing.
The only dept the mobile games have "evolved" is graphics and size, and that doesn't compesate for the lack of proper button inputs or gameplay depth.
So you're either one of those easy to impress people or you're in some way or another invested in the mobile gaming. Either way, you come off as one of those people that strive so hard to justify mobile games as proper games not because they are any good but for some other, unbeknownst even to yourself, reason. Because when you're talking about conventional games on a touch device the "It play amazing" argument doesn't stand. And the "it looks amazing" falls just as flat when judging games because by now, after ~ 2 decades of experience, we all know that's not what makes a game: fun, interesting or enjoyable.
@cyclonfr, I agree with you on the hardcore games don't make a good transition on handhelds, and funny enough the 2 GoW games on the PSP made a strong point in that regard for me. But keep in mind that on the PSP go you can do a save state and the vita has it as well. So you can stop whenever you want and resume just like any other mobile game.

The PS2 may only just have been discontinued, that doesn't mean it was getting much love. It still got plenty of "new" games, but none of them were big titles, all small Japstuff

Yeah I knew that, but surely I don't wanna play GoW for 30min, save, play 30min later, etc... It just doesnt feel right. When I play a hardcore game, I wanna sit in front of my TV for hours, to enjoy it on a big screen, with nice graphics and proper sound.
I can't imagine myself playing GoW 3 or Ascension, or Uncharted 3 in the subway you know.
Which is probably why Sony keep failing with the Vita/PSP

As much as I hate to admit it, i think rgb#000 is right about it... Even though Sony says they don't see the PS4 as an evolution to the PS3, but rather another console, they will ditch the PS3 quickly.
Proof of that is that they didn't do shit to block old hardware from pirating all their games, and trust me, they could. Which means they don't want to spend a single $ for security or anything, simply because they are focused on the PS4.
I wouldn't be surprised (but maybe i'm overreacting) if Sony is pushing the PS4 so fast because the PS3 was hacked. I think BEYOND will be the last 1st party game we will ever see.
Couldn't care less about FIFA/PES PS3 or CoD PS3, because obviously these games will still have PS3/360 versions for years to come, just like the PS2 kept getting subpar CoD games when the PS3/360 were out.
