yes something like that
I dont know enough about marketing and analytics but what I can say for sure is that "having DRM mechanisms that thwart piracy" is a mere secondary effect of what they plan with this always-on-always-connected strategy.
There must be gigantic profits to be made from this - subscriptions, microtransactions, personal information, statistics data mining.
The ongoing transformation of games from products into services.
The psychology of a connected playerbase - availability, manipulation, personalized consumer profiles, group pressure...
Its complex, and no matter how hard I try I cant grasp the big picture but what I see I do not like at all.

and preventing piracy, makes the console pretty much useless if you're banned from Xlive. But if c4 or any other pro's out there are able to hack it, they should be able to find an offline work-around too Smile

I am still doubtful it will be online-only even with the evidence mounting up. Didn't microsoft release statistics where they said that a very large number of people (AFAIR 40%) never connect their xbox to the internet, like not even once. It wouldn't really be a problem for me here in Cali because internet is very stable, but what really is a matter for concern is microsoft's servers. Also what about US states and countries where internet access is not as widespread/stable.

I don't know. I'll wait till they officially announce to make up my mind. But with all the negative press surrounding the new xbox, ps4 sounds like a great device if I was looking forward to next gen consoles.

One thing I don't understand is... what are the benefits of an always online drm system? I mean... consoles are designed to block the execution of unsigned code anyway, so in theory if you're running it it's legit.

On the other hand, if they manage to mod it wouldn't they start cracking the games to run without online checks, like they did with those Ubisoft games that required to be always online?

Seems to me it's a lot of hassle and bad pubblicity for almost no gain. It would just add a slight annoyance for pirates in case they do manage to mod the console itself. The only reason to do this is if the console has some design flaw that means it is easily moddable, so they add a second security layer knowing the first one will fall in a short time....

When the Durango (game machine) launches, it will not support backwards compatibility for 360 games out of the box. Instead, this functionality will come from the other unit that will be networked with the Durango to provide this (not unlike the DVD add-on for the original Xbox)

Quote:
Durango itself will also always be online like any other device (correct with rumors), but it will not be a requirement to play local content and it will not prevent playing used games.

http://kotaku.com/everything-we-know-about-the-next-xbox-480112913

Quote:
What We Almost Certainly Know About The Next Xbox

* You will be using Kinect, whether you want to or not. The second (and vastly improved) iteration of Microsoft's Kinect camera won't just be shipping with every console, it'll need to be plugged in and calibrated for the machine to even run, suggesting a deep level of integration with the next Xbox's user interface.

* If the controller ain't broke, don't fix it. Microsoft's control pad for the next Xbox is described as a "natural evolution" of the current controller. Expect slight revisions, not major changes. Also, your 360 controllers won't work on the new console. Sorry.

* Specs. Specs. Specs. The next Xbox will run on custom hardware that includes an 8-core, 64-bit CPU running at 1.6ghz, an 800mhz DirectX 11.x graphics processor and, alongside them, various "custom hardware blocks" that are able to handle certain individual tasks, taking the strain off the main CPU. There's also 8GB of DDR3 memory (at least in dev kits), a 500GB hard drive and built-in wi-fi. Oh, and it'll also use Blu-Ray discs.

* Your friend in green. The Xbox Companion App, already available for the current generation, is being overhauled and improved, and will give your tablet or phone many of the same capabilities Nintendo uses for its Wii U control pad screen.

* It can juggle your games. Just like the PS4, the next Xbox will be able to "hot swap" between programs, and will also be able to pause your game like a phone does - freezing the exact moment you close it down - instead of the more traditional save-game system.

* Install on the go. You won't need to install games for the next Xbox. The system will do that for you while you play.

* Taking over your TV. The next Xbox has a HDMI in port, which it seems will be used to turn your console into a fully-functioning TV box.

* Goodbye, Durango. For years now, the console's working title/codename internally with Microsoft and developers has been "Durango". Hope you haven't gotten too attached to it, though, because come May 21, it'll surely be gone, replaced by the machine's actual name.

* It'll probably be out in 2013. Kotaku, and several other outlets, have all been told the machine will be out in time for the 2013 holiday season. At least in the US.

May the NFOrce be with you always.

It's actually a pretty smart decision to not hold a press conference. They are in absolutely no shape to compete with Sony/MS, and like this, they at least have to face a little less comparison articles after e3. They are bypassing all the "Who won E3" and "Who had the best conference" articles in which they would lose anyways.

That controller looks so similar to the 360 controller now, it'll probably also feel veeerry similar to hold this time around, which really is f'in awesome imo. I don't have huge hands, still the ps3 controller always felt to small and light/cheap.

They also finally copied the concave analog sticks, which is also great. Now we just need the left analog stick replaced with the D-Pad Wink Every game except for fighting games use the stick as main movement input, so there is really no reason to put the D-pad in the more natural position...

But it also means many more shitty "look at my headshot" videos, there will be a never ending stream of those, since everyone can record console footage easily now and put those up on the web instantly...

i can't see myself using that stupid share button though. it'll be especially useless if the console is hacked.
