So i'm fed up with my E90 sitting on the driveway come winter. As soon as a dusting of snow covers the ground it goes nowhere. So i have been looking into 4x4's, but have found anything aesthetically pleasing to the eye is too expensive on road tax and general running costs.

So i have been looking at the BMW xDrive cars. Does anyone here have any experience in driving one in the snow and ice?

Specifically looking at a f30 320i Msport 2012 model.

I've driven in snow long enough with every form of drivetrain to know that having AWD / 4x4 doesn't do much for normal commuting in the snow. It's the tyres that matter.

Given how shit and salty the roads are in England it's best to just get a beater that you drive during the winter months if you have a car that you care about.

I've read what you are saying about the tyres before. It does seem to be the case that even with awd maybe not as much 4x4 that tyres are very important and standard tyres just aren't designed for low temperatures .

Standard tyres aren't going to cut it are they? Esp as this car has 19" rims! I'm not looking to go off road, just simply get my arse home in one piece. My current car 320d has standard tyres that are 265/40/19 on the rear and they just sit on top of the snow and spin, and being rear wheel drive it's a disaster.

The wife uses the car mainly in the week as she works part time, and she takes my boy to nursery. When shes working i have the car and she drives her little ford fiesta (great in the snow).

Maybe i should forget the xdrive and just send her to work on the train when it's snowing Very Happy

But up here in the NW the winter's are becoming colder and snow and ice prolonged.

Edit: Found this 5 series xDrive video. It handles this virgin snow, but compacted icy/slushy snow might prove more of challenge!

You'll find that AWD doesn't do jack to help with lateral grip. Tires sure do though.

And yes, a car with low profile 265 width likely summer tires won't do fuck-all in the snow.

So can you run winter/snow tires in dry conditions i.e say all the way through from november - march/april or will they degrade to quickly or have little grip in dry/normal conditions.

No, they'll be fine. Will feel like shit though. I don't know where exactly you are located but here in the midlands it doesn't snow usually until the much colder months. So you should be safe waiting until early December to throw the tires on, and pull them sometime in March. You'd be fine with a decent set of all seasons like the Continental DWS's as well. Although the huge tread depth of snow/winter tires is what you want.

I live near the pennines, Lancashire. So we get pretty bad winters up here, esp recently.

I am going to stick with the xDrive i think. This, and added winter tires should cover it. I see they do 19" winter tires, so i don't need to fork out for new set of rims as well.

Thanks Mchart, now off to research which tires !! Smile

Mmm seems 19" are not recommended. 17" is the ideal

I suggest getting a cheap set of wheels for the winter months as well as to not ruin the stock ones.

Why cheap out on the winter tires? edit: oh ok, the wheels, yes that is indeed a good suggestion. I use 16" steel wheels in winter Laughing . I've had good experiences in snow with contiental T830P though the TS850 seems to be even better. Michelin Alpin A4 or GY Ultragrip are mostly good choices aswell. I tend to believe the german ADAC on their tests. Apparently it helps to put weight on the rear axle on the lighter BMW models.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Very Happy

Snow tires are on-par or slightly better on wet surfaces, but worse on dry, and have excessive wear cause the tire is softer at hot temperatures.

I usually check Auto Build for latest summer/winter tire reviews (brand and model) before I buy tires, and am pretty happy with what I got.

Well i'll start saving for either a second set of 17"/18" rims with winter tires already on, or set of winter tires and have them changed over when needed. But set of cheap rims will be easier and i can do that myself.

Just bought today... Very Happy

thinner tires are better for snow than wider ones.. so consider changing to smaller rims for the winter
also helps with pavement damage repair Twisted Evil

Again, for any country that has snow.. You're better off just driving a beater around when there is snow on the ground and saving your actual good car for when there isn't shit tons of salt and sand on the road. England in particular is fucking horrible when it comes to this. They dump down so much fucking salt/sand. Every winter that goes by my poor Mazdaspeed3 gets raped over here.

Laughing

My Speed 3 was two years old when it got to England. Undercarriage had zero surface rust. Looked perfect. I work on my car a lot.

Two winters later in England and the poor thing is covered in surface rust and generally looks like shit. No 'real rust', but still. I wash it a lot and try to take care of it but the salt just rapes shit.

Also had to get the front bumper resprayed because of all the fucking sand they thrown down during the winter as well.

Yes, and i'm trying to sell it now before I go back.

Looking for 11k GBP / equivalent euro. Car is over three years old so it's tax free.

There are transparent protection folios that can be applied to the front bumper of a car so the paint doesn't get scratched. But applying it to the bumper, side panels and top costs around 1 repaint of the bumper.

I went to the BMW xDrive event in Vancouver and i was actually very impressed.

We compared them to the Quatro System. The Benz system and the Acura TL line.

Im not a BMW fan at all, but that xDrive system worked very well. Better than everything we compared it to. It reminded me of my ex wifes Cyanne on snow and ice. Porsche system though is still better. Smile

I dont recall the tire setup, sry.

But we drove the 330xi and the 330xi with the M package, and a 335xi, and the 335xi with the M package. All coupes, 2012 models. i did the event last summer i think. And we got to bag an M3, but that was more for hot laps.

Vs a A4 and A6 , an E300 (I think was the benz) and the Acura TL. There was one ofter manufacturer but i drawing a blank.

I love cars Smile On the hunt for a GTR right now. Smile

And maybe i am just used to paying more for cars (Because there one of my passions) but a BMW is not that expensive. Unless your looking at an M product. Sure more expensive than a KIA. But the Quality you get, better resale value and more all round fun... Its worth the extra money. Smile

Most of you live in countries with decent tax rules regarding sport cars, in "eco-green-friendly-norway" we are pretty much shot if we buy a car with more than 250 hk :/
