Back in 1995 or 96 in a Polish Computer Magazine named Top Secret there was a running gag call it the first press meme [it was a short comic one-strip] about a guy that wanted to see new awesome games in the FUTURE ... so he build a time machine and went into it , in the year XXXX he when into a game store... and on the shelfs where what ?.... re-imagined re-released versions of TETRIS , BULDERDASH ,DIANA SISTERS etc... when he asked about it the clerk said "Game piracy was so awful this past years and game ideas was so overused that they had to re-imagine and re-release every game that was good... to make people buy it AGAIN for new computers"

it was funny then , people laughed ...

If you want to find problems, you'll find them.
If you want to find solutions, you'll find them.
If you want to find something negative, you'll find it.
If you want something positive, you'll find it.

Essentially, when it comes to the "health" of gaming 2013 you will, like the Internet, find what you seek. Everything starts with your own choice of view.

Yes, yes I'm back.

handful of good games is enough to keep most people satisfied, though they forget we used to get a handful of great games a month without being of any previous IP.

Gaming isnt dead and wont ever die, though if you compare gaming to 10 / 15 / 20 years ago and think its anything close to the quality and quantity then as hfric says you are too young to remember or experience it even.

It's more like a problem related to the chronic lack of innovative ideas, at least when it comes to AAA games, where 2-3 'successful' gameplay formulae are used and abused to churn out sequels of sequels and all those remakes that have nothing to do with the original games.

There are great exceptions, but generally gaming these days is Hollywood's mirror image when it comes to creativity and mental challenge. Then you have Kickstarter, where true fans dictate the directions to take in order to create something that it's both modern and free from the mainstream influxes, and that's definitely one of the best things that have ever happened to the PC world. In short, we're safe... for now Cool Face

It's understandable that more and more publishers are in these days (with the recession and whatnot) are not willing to place millions on a project which might not sell well. Hence the sequel, remake, reboot "hell". But c'mon as fisk said it, its about your perspective; Dota players are local celebrities in China, likewise with Starcraft 2 in Korea, both titles are one of the biggest e-sport scenes and both are PC only titles.

Also with the success of Minecraft & DayZ, alot of initiatives for indie games and original titles are being done through Steam Greenlight, Kickstarter initiatives etc. Even EA with their obnoxious way of handling their games, are in fact embracing originality and creativity albeit in smaller titles.
http://gamasutra.com/view/news/169719/EA_Indie_Bundle_ruffles_feathers.php

I've got alot out of DayZ personally which proved to be the most immersive things I've played in years and surprised me where I didnt thought I could be surprised anymore, and that brought new hope for original game design in general. So dead? Not by a long shot.

Games suck these days because it's too expensive to take risks and go beyond the linear "FOLLOW THE BIG MARKER" type of game. Mainly due to the increasing expense of making realistic engines like gaming depended on it. When big publishers realize that they don't have to include realism in everything for a game to succeed we'll be seeing more creative games.

And in the end, it's a business where people vote with their money. That means if the majority are dumb couch 12yo couch potatoes you're fucked no matter what.

Well honestly it's a shame but fuck video games I'll go play tennis if the companies no longer target audiences from my generation then there's no need to force myself to like games that simply aren't for someone like me. It's rather insulting when a game almost plays itself. Seriously insulting for a generation that grew up doing some insane shit to win in arcades and LAN parties.

"People didn't agree with me and they are "kids"".

The martyr "Whaaa, I won't bother to come here anymore" at the end was fresh though. But meaningless, particularly if you choose to not follow through.
