Quote:

Richard Garriott, the award winning designer and creator of the Ultima franchise, makes his triumphant return to the genre that earned him a place in the Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award. Shroud of the Avatar is the first installment of Richard’s new vision and represents the reinvention of the classic, fantasy role-playing which he pioneered. A fantasy role-playing game that will focus more on player choices and discovery than on level grinding.

Shroud of the Avatar general features:

From Lord British's Treatise on "What is an Ultimate RPG?":

Fully interactive virtual world - If it looks usable, it should do something
Deep original fiction - Ethical parables, cultural histories, fully developed alternate language text
Physical game components will be available: Cloth map, fictional manuals, trinkets
Multiplayer Online Game - which can also be played solo player / offline

Maybe it's a law thing? He can't invest in this or something? Seems completely illogical, but I don't see why else this guy would need funding.

Maybe some dodgy bloke on the moon sold him some magic beans, promising him an improved hairstyle and dress sense. hence why he is skint.

Kickstarter pitch left me really cold. What he has looks like crap, both gameplay and visuals. He talks about the game in a very roundabout way and comes off a little cocky about his achievements long past. Final nail to the coffin: Multiplayer focus.

Lol, no, it's not a political campaign we're talking about. I really don't know why he went to kickstarter, out of all the old devs he's probably the most well-off. Only explanation that comes to mind is that he blew all his money on hair gel and gold chains. And lot's of drugs, I remember the guy being absolutely batshit crazy Very Happy

Maybe it's to convince some publisher (EA holds the Ultima right's do they not?) that there's a genuine interest from the player community.

Or he just doesn't want to spend his own money for whatever reason.
(Or he has to spend some of it anyway, I don't know how these things work.)

EDIT: And he calls this title the first episode does he not so there must be plans for a continuation of sorts.
(Or trying to set up a Ultima based MMO again eventually, what do I know.)

IMO he is doing a Kickstarter just to secretly fund it himself and kick Project Eternity's ass. Also as a most succesful kickstarter project the game will have the best advertisement. 2 goals with 1 simple kickstarter.

The name of the game sounds so incredibly generic and pretentious. It's like he tried to think of as many cool-sounding words as he could and then mashed them all together.

i played all utimas and i own all of them and when you would played them then you would understand what this title means ... he can't use ULTIMA.9.The.Real.Proper.Version.NO.WHAT.IS.A.PALADIN.SHIT-LORdBrittiSh because EA owns the IP so... he creates a game about another avatar that has to fix another set or virtues

Seems to me like the Kickstarter is more of a marketing move than an actual need for financing. Great way to go public with the upcoming game and keep people's interest.

In this case it might be. But you can't extrapolate that to all other projects.

this, coupled with its by lord british.. although i loved the ultima games back in the day (clocked up about 8 hours a day for 8 months or so on ultima 4 - filled 3 or 4 a4 refill pads with quest details, maps, spell details etc)
hes trying to bring back ultima, but in a way that just looks like a cheapass moneygrab

Doesn't look like he's trying to bring back Ultima at all. More like pursuing his dream of social/MMO games while playing the nostalgia card with fans for additional funding and free PR.

"Other than a few exceptions, like Chris Roberts, I've met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am. I'm not saying that because I think I'm so brilliant. What I'm saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there's a reason why."

I'm obviously tempted to post the Are You Serious but I never really played any of his games so...

Pfft, Everyone knows who the most brilliant game designer is...

 Spoiler:

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
