It only needs to be more accessible. Let people buy the station, get a few freighters and get a steady income. But also allow others to really get into the micro of things in order to maximize the efficiency of the empire to perfection. |
Agreed =)
I can't believe I'm actually pushing FOR "accessibility" but in the case of X3-X3TC; definitely. There should be options for both kinds of people; management and workers. I don't want to be an accounting clerk, so the heavy sim aspects of empire design and management just didn't really twig with me ... I play these games to be a worker, to be the merc, the trade runner. I wish there were automated options for setting up rudimentary trade systems (because from my experience, the economy stalled HARD unless the player was actively working to maintain it) that generated a nice - steady - stream of income, without forcing you to step out of the cockpit (or into hours upon hours of HEAVY scripting) in order to do it. If you WANT to dig deeper, then go ahead, the extensible scripting interface is beyond massive - you can practically rewrite the entire game from within it.
I'm well aware I'll be called a derp for this, but I don't care. Anyone who thinks I'm a derp is obviously middle-management in their 9-to-5, or has never played X3 and realised the massive complexity of it
.... though on the plus side, X3/X3-TC has quite simply THE most engaging and enjoyable space combat I've ever played, with visuals that - even today - rip the shit out of most rigs. The non-business side of the game is great (plot notwithstanding) and there are hundreds upon hundreds of new ships, weapons, upgrades, missions, planets, sectors, etc. There is nothing more rewarding than having a massive dogfight with two, heavily armed, pirates... only to eventually damage one so bad he warps out of the system, leaving his crippled friend behind. Then seeing the crippled pirate eject from his ship and take off in his escape pod, leaving you free to eject from yours and commandeer his ship.
THAT's exhilarating. |
I agree, I think X3 just became too much. When things goes from being a game to a job, I think they need to tune it down a little. While I do respect their effort, I think they need to change it to be a little more accessible. They should let people that want to micromanage everything be able too, but having some options to put stuff like trade routs to automatic would really had helped. Like you can put the settlers in CIV to build roads themself, instead of having to move them every turn as you had to in the first CIV-games. Stuff like that would help I think.
The game idea are amazing and I love games like this. The X-games are the only spacetrade games left more or less. I wish for more of those as the old Elite- and Privateer-gamers I am

Where the hell are you guys on about, both the standard sector trader and universal trader were automated trade runs. Not to talk about the IMMENSE amount of plugins and mods that would fully automate trading and even giving you a special menu where you could oversee everything in the simplest setup.
Ofcourse actually checking for these things would require initiative, something so very lacking these days.

Only one pilotable player ship? That is kind of lame. I've never played played X:BTF but half of the reason im having so much fun with X3:TC right now is all the different kinds of ships I can pilot.
Freighters, fighters, missile frigates, ships i make up just for boarding operations, heck my main ship is a corvette that carries around two fighters for when I feel like mixing it up a bit. Yeah, M1 and M2 class capitol ship piloting is a pain and not that much fun, but I'd much rather they rework that system instead of just cutting it entirely.
I do have to say, please no missions as insane as the Hub Plot. 450,000 ore, 250,000 crystals, 400,000 silicon, and 75,000 microchips? sweet mother of god kill me now im never going to get this done even if i leave my game on SETA for a month.

Well, just like the indicated Darkstar One, the FIRST game in the X series only had one ship as well. The X-Perimental was your only ship throughout the game, though you could upgrade it.
(the X-Tension addon fixed that though)

I didn't like the first game without the addon, I dare say all of the fans of the games as they are today, are fans of a game with multiple ships and choices. And I believe that many will feel that the developers are going down a path they don't care for.

What on Earth made them do that?! Part of the fun for me was flying different ships. It was a sign of progress and accomplishment. Imagine switching from a humble fighter to a full-blown capital ship. And even that needed loads of money to fully equip. I'm not sure what Egosoft are thinking. Their forums are probably raging HARD because of this since the X series has a VERY loyal fan base. So I think Egosoft might actually reconsider this decision.

I think they are going for a simpler system, previous games were over complicated at times.

Some highlights about being limited to 1 ship:
Quote: | First of all there is the possibility to remotely control a drone. This is basically exactly like switching personally into another ship. You can fly drones in a 1st person perspective and it looks as if you are inside the drone. You do this, however, using a Virtual Reality environment in your ship. While your co-pilot takes over the control of your ship, goggles come down from the ceiling and you dive into the remote control of the drone.
The cool thing about this, is that with drones we have even more design freedom than with ships. They can be very small, for example, and are generally very specialized for a particular job. The whole gameplay experience can be a lot more varied than with normal ships, which always have to contain a lot more features. |
Quote: | Where the drones are your preferred vehicles for specialized tasks inside and near the surface of a station, capital ships are your vehicle of choice for all the many "big" tasks. From transportation of goods, collecting of resources like ore, gas or plasma up to large carriers and destroyers. They all exist in X Rebirth and you can of course own and operate many of them!
You can in fact even land on these beasts and get out of your playership to meet NPCs while watching the large ship move around in space FROM the deck of the ship!
You won't be sitting in the cockpit and steer such a capital ship from the first person perspective anymore simply because that is boring. Steering huge and slowly-turning ships manually just doesnt make sense. It would force us to make them turn and move unrealistically quick and even then they would be impossible to maneuver near our huge and complex shaped stations.
Instead the steering is done by NPCs who work for you but closely follow your orders. You can control capital ships who work for you in many new ways. |
So basically.. you have your main ship which will probably have a decent balance of speed, defence and maneuverability. Basically the kind of ship you'd be flying most of the time anyways in previous x-games.
But you can also fly smaller ships (remote controlled drones) which gives you a viable option to go fighter style without the increased risk of death.
And you can fly larger ships (although indirectly by ordering the captain) without the annoyance of steering an oil tanker.
Granted.. it might be better to have those options 'and' still fly any ship we want... but I can see this working out for this best.

It says it's a dock in the top right of the screenshot. That thing with the trees is probably just habitation.
