Two different approaches. I doubt that crackers normally analyze some javascript code to circumvent some server communication. Cracking also an art in itself. Writing the server emu might prove very difficult, but that ain't required.
BTW there are several levels to this. What would you call a successful cracked SimCity 5? That you can play online with your buddies and save your shit into the cloud?
If the source code for local saving is missing that feature won't be rebuild by crackers. And playing online might really require the ea infrastructure if the crackers are not able to emulate the server responses to the client.
So what they could do as of now is just disable the communication to the server until you want to save your game. For us pirates this means -> No advancement at all, nobody would want to start over the whole process of building a city when he restarts the game.
Well it's not like the legit paying customers don't have any problems in this regard

I'm pretty sure that, with time, someone figures out the server protocol and writes a fully functioning emulator for it, even the region part. I have zero time right now but when the content is not encrypted, it is usually not all that hard to reverse engineer something when you know all the responses.

Goddamnit, I feel pissed off. This is the last game I ever buy from EA. They can go fuck themselves.
I guess I could call American Express and do a chargeback because the company sold me a broken product and wont refund.

even d3 wasnt this broken, the biggest problems were initially the connectivity / error 37, afterwards the bad loot system and rmah reliance.
it was bad, but its not even close to the disaster that is sim city...
