rewatched hobbitses

think i know why i prefer lotr to the hobbit...

for 1, i felt the characters in lotr were more unique and better characterised... i knew and remembered them all, and i cared about all. Perhaps it was the staggered approach to introducing them, so that i could slowly get to know each one, rather than have them all dumped into the doorway in one big go Very Happy In lotr, i remembered each face, their personality and what they were about, and i didnt want to see any of them come to harm.

In the hobbit, i've basically picked my 3 or 4 favourites, and the rest are a blur and feel all pretty interchangeable. only a handful were ever even slightly developed, the rest i wouldnt care if they were killed off. HOPEFULLY that'll be addressed in the sequels, but i can only compare lotr to what ive seen so far.

SECOND: the scope of the goal. nothing is more appealing to me than an epic world-destroying cataclysm, especially when the story revolves around uniting forces to combat it. i just loved that about lotr, trying to pull everyone together, reforge alliances, grand scale sacrifice for a greater good... i loved it. I also loved that it was about the mostly solitary journey of impossible odds and distance for frodo and sam...

hobbit on the other hand... if you REALLY boil it down... its a treasure hunt. yeah big shit happens at the end, with the dragon and the war, but the QUEST was for the treasure. its scope is RELATIVELY unimportant...

now i enjoyed hobbit, its a very good film and time will tell if jackson ultimately ends up building a fantastic and satisfying trilogy out of the story, but to me, lotr was pretty close to perfect, not just as a story, but in how jackson managed to make it, and thats why personally i feel so far lotr (or to directly compare opening acts, fellowship of the ring) was better than hobbit.

im kinda pissed that it didnt win the oscar for visuals though... the cgi was just fantastic. hopefully they're just saving the awards for the third film.

Lincoln 9/10 excellent movie and another excellent performance by Daniel Day-Lewis like always, you don't see him often on movies but when he is given a main role, it's always oscar material. Just awesome, the resemblence to abraham lincoln was top notch...

Lincoln 3/5

Interesting historical piece, as usual one cant really know for sure how much creative freedom was taken in portraying the events and characters. I was annoyed by the lincoln character, who was portrayed as a jesus figure, righteous and kind, humble etc dont know if anyone in politics can afford to be like that but I had a hard time sitting through most scenes of him giving some heart felt speech.

The oscar should've gone to joaquin phoenix for his role in the master, he was lightyears ahead of D.D lewis...

Lincoln 5 / 10 - A quite enjoyable spectacle of mediocre muzak-like one dimensional drama. As is so attributed by the likes of one dimensional Steven Spielberg. One perspective, a bland one, of something that feels ever historically significant. Without showing the gruesome reality of it all; at face value. Dodging (not showing) the real issues, but instead in a politically correct fashion to avoid dilemmas in the hearts of those who carry weak stomachs. Still at a pace and with such dignity as is worthy of cinematic appraise. Daniel Day Lewis makes a predictable act in a role that in a way that forges no new appreciation of the art. This however is Spielberg's fault, with his usual modicum of held-back, dignified, sometimes boring scenes with heroic music he normalizes the scenes that could have become great, they instead become barely worthy of a shrug.

Spielberg must be the most over-appreciated directors of our time. Every movie he makes are so delicately and sophistically bland and a homage to the average. And this movie is no different. It is still worth seeing. But don't expect any surprises.

The new OZ 7.5/10. Pretty good, lighthearted movie. A lot of in-jokes that reference the old movie which I've seen many years ago and don't remember much. Even though Franco overplayed the facial expressions schtick in some scenes, overall I thought he was great.

Final Countdown 9/10

Still a great movie. It has everything, amazing music, great plot, good cast, etc. Being filmed on the actual carrier also helped a lot. Smile

The only downsides are some of the extras, since they were actual crew members with no acting background, and it really showed. Very Happy Some of the effects are really bad, except for the vortex, that still looks great in my opinion, even if it looks dated.
