players just got a free month and the promise of the first big update in december (with more to follow every 3 months) with interface improvements, lots of lag reduction, some new content and various other improvements.

Players with an active account on november 19th will get another free month to make sure everyone gets to experience the first big update that's coming late november, with the second big update following early 2011.
the changelist is quite big but the highlights are things like new quests, notorious monsters, map, interface and targeting improvements and some balance tinkering. required exp to level up from level 10-20 will also be reduced to speed up things a bit in the early game.
I think it's pretty nice to see that they acknowledge the problems with their game and give out 2!! free months while they get their shit together.
it still sucks that they released such an unfinished game but 2 free months for pretty much everyone is quite nice and other mmos with similarly horrible launches didn't do anything like that and just died a month after release. with the free months, FF XIV still has a chance.

i think they missed a real opportunity to reinvent itself (the game i mean) and just go f2p. given how shit it was at launch, i dont think it has real staying power as a pay to play game, but launch it as f2p? shit, lots of people who never had that shitty launch experience would give it a try, and probably continue playing it as well.

chiv is 100% right. I hated the UI in FFXI and I have only heard bad things about this new game and all its mistakes. But I would still probably try it out if it were free2play.

True, and let's face it, people are gonna see SWTOR free-to-play, Aion, Tera, even necro Lineage 2, that's old as hell but theres lots of people still playing, all of em free-2-play and all with high production values. Why the hell would i pay them for it? Gotta say i'll prolly (99% chance) won't.

In the email that had your key it had a link to go to. When you go there, it had a 2 phase process to follow. The first link was to get your account updated/setup.
The second link was about getting access to the forums. I'm looking at them now and it explicitly says "Getting Started" as a forum topic. It's after the Japanese "section".
@Sausje - Yes, it's closed. No idea how they picked the people.
