PostPosted: Tue, 19th Feb 2013 08:20    Post subject: broken leg
So, eleven days ago, Friday night, I was in cologne with some friends.

A friend and I start hitting each other in the face laughing. (Because, you know, we are buddies, and sometimes buddies hit each other just for fun, some will find this weird) Then he pushes me, but my foot is cought between a stair and a wall but my body turns around and I fall (due also to the alcohol and THC in my blood), breaking my lower leg (twice).

Now I got a long nail in the Tibia, and am sitting at home, not being able to do my job (teacher) and having to rely on my girlfriend for basic tasks. I find it quite humiliating and it makes me really angry at times.

I'm not angry at my friend though, because he couldnt have known my foot was caought, and I could have done the same to him. There was no anger involved.

I am now realizing how frail the human body is and how much I was used to it working, never thinking about how it could fail.

On the positive side. I have not smoked one cigarette since and I I now have plenty of time to read in order to prepare a minor philosophical paper (+-100 pages) I am going to write on Bergson and his concept of virtuality.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Always seems like a good idea when drunk, me and my friends punched, choked, tripped, burned and thrown each other. Luckily no major injuries yet, some scars through, especially the burning.

Sorry to hear about your leg.

Throwing was mostly done in snow or lakes though. But none of us seem to be able to drink moderately, so things get out of control sometimes Very Happy

Oh man I'm sorry to hear that, when you break something you always become a bundle for someone else..which is one of the worst sensations ever. Razz

I've broken my ankles 4 times in the past (and at least one of these has been because of me being stoopid/drunk-ish)..not to mention the distorted knee when playing five-a-side football just because I wanted to dribble a-la Ronaldo (the result was the same.. Laughing )

Get better!! You'll need a lot of patience but everything will be ok, you're still young Very Happy

That's the weird thing about broken bones. Since you have no nerves in them, unless they tear through flesh, you won't notice until... well you notice.

Yeah there was no surface damage but after the internal bleeding started I started to feel the pain from all the pressure and propably would have fainted from the pain if I hadn't sat down immediatly lol

It is starting to be ok for the most of it, still walking like I have shit in my pants Very Happy

When there are knees and ankles involved is different though, with all the legaments and tendons, excruciating pain is always guaranteed (at least it was in my case Razz)

human bones have periosteum a membrane that hurts. It has nerve endings there and once the bone is broken and deformed it will produce pain.

Good recovery for your broken bones!

Thanks for the support guys! Very Happy And yes, I know it was stupid.

It has something to do with what we call antistructure. Just like the Carnival in Cologne has one of its original purposes in turning around the social roles once per year to create a balance in society, the fooling around on some weekends and partying with buddies is part of my balance. Some people may think that at 31y you should become sirias, but I suppose I wont be that serious until I have children (which are not planned up until now, gf wants to experience her job for at least 2y).
I have always felt that I dont really want to be that serious a person, some people just take themselves too seriously, which, in my eyes just makes them look ridiculous.

And stige, thanks for the pics, your toe looks really yummy. I remember having lost a fingernail once because someone closed the door of the car when my fingers were still outside. The pain! The broken leg was very painful aswell, when they needed to move it around for the bandages, It was almost unbearable. I wish your toe good recovery! Smile

And interesting thing about broken bones is that they tend to be stronger after healing. Experiments where many small fractures were created resulted in stronger bones. So perhaps we'll all go through micro fracturing procedures to improve our skeleton in the near/far future.

It also increases the mass and density, which makes it less feasible to apply to an entire limb.

Okay.. specifically chosen bones and skeletal parts that would benefit. We could make our skulls thicker??

Hehe I'm exactly like you, I never take anything seriously and to be honest, haven't changed much since I was in my teen years. Razz Some people even say that I'm immature at times, I prefer the term "peter pan complex" (nah, I'm not that desperate..well, almost Laughing ). Of course there are moments when I'm a grumpy cat, but fortunately those last only a few minutes, and everything is back to normality in no time.

P.S. Don't fool yourself, children will awake your inner child, too xD
