I don't have a problem with the setting (though I do think they went overboard with the kiddie stuff), the gameplay mechanics are just done to death by now. The jRPG genre must be one of the worst genres for innovation, ancient games like chrono trigger still do many things better than most modern jRPGs.

its true that there is hardly innovation in the game, its supposed to be an old school jrpg with new graphics, which is great for fans of classic jrpgs, but not everyone´s cup of tea.
regarding innovation, xenoblade on wii is the most refreshing rpg in a long time, mixing the best aspects of jrpgs and wrpgs.

And there is the reason for the high scores. Either reviewers are overly hyped from playing an old school game again or it's to push an agenda about traditional jrpg's still being the best in order for more to be developed.
That's what i think anyway |
its a matter of opinion, for me this game and xenoblade are the only 2 really great jrpgs of current console generation. xenoblade for its fresh new take on the genre, ni no kuni for its classic gameplay and re-introduction of some beloved but forgotten old aspects like a large overworld to traverse.
what i dont understand is people complaining about the game´s cartoony look because they cant relate to the characters.
so, you can relate to marcus fenix, you are an invincible 7 foot hulk of a man shooting thousands of locust to pieces?
you can also relate to a cod character because you ve lived through a real war campaign?
unlikely...
this simple character of a little boy is probably one of the most relatable characters of current gen gaming, but i guess people rather want to play super heroes and pretend they can relate to them

so then why complain about not being able to relate to a character in this game specifically, when you cant relate to characters from any other games either?
its not a valid point of criticism if it is inherent in all of gaming.

It was you who were talking about relating to characters, not me. I said i don't find a game based on toddlers to be fun in any way.

not you, it was a reply to Prandur´s post
Quote: | I love jRPGs which allow you to even remotely connect with the characters (Lost Odyssey or Final Fantasy)... but I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy playing as a 10-year old or w/e. |

But you haven't written any replies to him, but written them to me. You have me entirely confused.

And i also replied. And if you think for a few seconds while thinking of your reply to him and my reply to yours you might actually understand why i thought you could relate.

try restarting the ps3, then switching to usb with gamedata.
whenever you open multiman, you need to restart the ps3 before you can switch with gamedata.

exactly, some of the best and most unique games of this gen, among them being the 2 ratchet and clank single player titles, have a child-like cartoonish design.

Of course I can't relate to the main characters in GoW or CoD or other modern FPS shooters... that's why I never touched any of those games. I can, on some level, relate to most main protagonists in RPGs - but not to kids, that's simply a dealbreaker for me.
Keep in mind that games are a matter of taste. I'm sure others will love the game as it is... but I personally consider it a pity that the authors didn't choose a more "neutral" setting.

you go to the "cage" icon in the menu, then choose a familiar and a treat to give him.
notice that treats arent simply edibles like sandwiches or bread that your characters use for healing, treats are sweets like chocolate, ice cream etc. that have their own category and can only be used for that.
btw, had a run of 15-20 hrs on the psn version without a freeze, then i got to the ice dungeon on the northwestern continent and had like 6 freezes in it alone.
it was a struggle to beat the boss and just get the fuck out of it, and since then, which has been like 5 hrs so far, not a single freeze anymore, weird...
can anyone else report whether they had any issues with that dungeon or not?
EDIT: also when i revisit the dungeon now for a sidequests, it will keep freezing like before, once i leave it i can play normally without any freezing, so it definitely has something to do with the damn dungeon itself.

Last question guys. I don't understand the sign thing. At first I thought it was like pokemon, every element has a countering element. I however don't see any extra damage or less damage when I try to use my familiars accordingly. What exactly are these signs good for?
I revise my previous opinion, the game is pretty good. It does however starting to look like I'll have to do a lot of backtracking later on, I really hope that's not the case.

yep signs do play a role, basically sun > moon > star > sun (there is also a 4th rare one, planet, but thats a bit more complicated).
though it doesnt guarantee that you will always do more damage with a sun character against a moon character, since the elements also play a role (physical, light, dark, fire, water, wind).
the effectiveness of your attacks is shown by the colour of the damage number:
white is standard, orange is effective, blue is ineffective.
in tougher battles you can switch between your familiars and let each of them land a hit to see who is the most effective.
and dont worry about the backtracking, later on you will have means of airborne travel and even better: instant teleportation to all visited towns and dungeons.

You're telling me you were aware of game crashing and you used a single save slot instead of revolving 3-4 save slots? You were asking for it...
