Epic Citadel

Quote:
What is Epic Citadel?

Epic Citadel is an application that showcases the technical capabilities of the award-winning Unreal Engine 3 on iOS devices.

In Epic Citadel, players navigate a fictional castle realm using simple and intuitive touch controls. It’s all about exploring the world, from the circus bazaar to the bridge overlooking the river to the mysterious cathedral at the center of town. Look around, navigate the area and enjoy the dazzling visuals.

A little taste of what to expect from Project Sword graphics.

It looks epic (for a handheld)

At first I thought it was a game, but ... oh well.

It´s a playable tech demo!

And I must say, I´m very impressed.

Some screens I took:

You should know that in the phone it looks a lot sharper. The textures are great!

3GS and newer hardware.

The iOS platform is pretty capable. Has a decently clocked ARM CPU, and a decent GPU as well. Combine that with all the input methods available, and all the developer support - The iOS platform is without a doubt the best mobile gaming platform right now. While Android devices are technically capable of similar games - The problem with the Android enviroment is that developers have to deal with a wealth of different devices with different specifications and OS versions. Where as with iOS devices it's fairly straight forward. Hence why you see developers like Epic and id jumping on board.

And yeah, the tech demo looks amazing on my iPhone 4. The jaggies aren't visible at all once you squeeze that picture down to the screen size on the device itself. Of course, even with the jaggies visible it's still impressive. Can't wait to see the full-fledged game Epic is putting out later this fall, along with Rage in the spring.

Such a shame there's no love for the iTouch 2nd Gen Sad Damn it.... I wanted a 3rd Gen, but they are only 32GB and up, and the price for those are absolutely preposterous.

@sabin1981 You device unfortunately has a very weak GPU when compared to 3Gs and up. The new ones have shader capability, OpenGL ES 2 support, etc.

BTW, this looks a lot more impressive than the Carmack crap.

I know Sad I've generally been fine with it, since the VAST majority of games are flawless on the 2nd Gen, simply offering some better visuals or smoother gameplay on 3rd Gen/3GS iPhone. This is the first one I've seen, albeit just a tech demo, that absolutely REQUIRED the advanced hardware.

Are you talking about the 60fps RAGE demo?

But from what I understand, this isn't a game, so it doesn't have enemy characters, weapons, AI, level scripting etc etc.

LEAVE CARMACK ALONE !!!

Neither did Carmack's demo, he only had some very low poly models with animations on loop in very tight close quarters area. This is a big map, and that village is so detailed (considering the devices).

@sabin1981 Yes, I did mean that.

Get 59.x fps benchmark on performance or highest quality on the nexus 4, guess it's fps capped.. not very useful as a benchmark tool.

to see a difference you need a benchmark that actually challenges the respective gpus'
