Could you compare it to another jRPG please?

I know it's already been said, but I think that the Dragon Quest 8 comparison is really good. The combat reminds me a bit of Rogue Galaxy (another Level 5 game from the PS2 era), but shifted heavily toward the traditional jrpg side.

I have almost nothing but good things to say about this game, but I do have a few points of criticism.

First, as with every attempt to "modernize" traditional jrpg battle mechanics, it often just results in a bunch of useless fluff that generally doesn't matter and only serves as bloat. The melee attack system, which is essentially a command you hit to start the character melee attacking for several seconds, often ends in the character/familiar ignoring your careful positioning for a weak spot or w/e and moving around the enemy to an undesirable location.

I think the combat is just incredibly clumsy, and yet another example of developers breaking something further in an attempt to fix it. The worst part is that, when backtracking to get some shit you missed or couldn't take before, the age-old jrpg problem of low-level shit enemies still taking you into the combat system and then the loot readout/exp/"ehrmagehrd my shitty familiar 34125414 just leveled" up screens come up from behind you and buttfucks another 30 seconds out of your life. I think I'm being generous when I say that at least 8% of your gameplay time will probably end up being spent fighting shitty low level enemies that you want to run past.

Speaking of which, the second point is all of the backtracking. I spent the early parts of the game thinking that certain spots in every zone would later on serve as a fast travel system. But it's actually a way to store/retrieve your pokemons. And if you're like me and you absolutely insist on getting 100% completion in games you're in for a lot of traveling.

For anyone who has played Blue Dragon you might remember the little forcefields that covered some chests, which later on you could remove with a red/green/blue/whatever device. Well, there's something similar in this game with certain chests that you can't open right away. The worst part is that you aren't really given any idea what level your open-this-shit wand has to be to open it, and if your shit isn't high enough it just tells you to come back with a more powerful one. So you could spend 20 mins backtracking to some dungeon you were at 10 hours earlier just to find out that you STILL can't open it. At least Blue Dragon had a fast travel system to compensate for its bullshit.

Finally, without spoiling anything for those who haven't played it yet, the character interactions that make the main character look like a lunatic who talks to himself. This shit annoys me endlessly. Not so much the fact that these interactions occur, but the fact that he almost never gets called out on it. No one calls the funny farm on Oliver. If I lived in his hometown I'd be worried that one day his imaginary friend would tell him to burn down my house, but no, people are just all "silly Oliver, you're so energetic!"

In fact, I could go on at length about how much I hate the people in his hometown. They're all psychopaths. They should be looking out for Oliver, but instead they just let him trip out imagining that he's traveling to some other world, savings its inhabitants from a wizard.

Anyway, despite those things really driving me crazy, this is by far the best pure jrpg that I've played this console generation. The last one I enjoyed was probably Resonance of Fate, and that was three years ago or something.

I would thoroughly encourage anyone who has yet to get it to get it. Now.

luckily, im not plagued by any freezes now (except the wizard book). Got 12 hours played and i had said hardcore freeze only once in the beginning.

Im on external with the duplex and have all the options in multiman launch thingy turned off (bd mirror, usb bla, etc.). Dunno if that has anything to do with it.

Im 13 hours in and no crashes with BD mirror and external drive on, rest off.

Empty again Sad

So I FTPd the packages over to my PS3.. Went into MM and selected the first Package file, hit X to "queue" it or whatever, it went into a screen that says "Please wait..." and has been there probably over 25 minutes now.

Continue to wait or did something break?

EDIT: It went!

you are on rogero 4.30 (spoofed to 4.31), it has like 10 versions, or close to that number. and difference between first rogero 4.30 and latest rogero 4.30 is huge. if it takes a long time to mount pkgs to install, and you don't have old style install packages in XMB that tells me your rogero is outdated, and possibly multiman too.

my advice if you don't want to keep waiting half an hour for PKGs to mount, install rogero 4.30 2.05 and multiman 04.19.01 Wink

latest multiman allowed fast pkg mounting on rogero 2.03. if you have old multiman and rog 2.03 it will take forever to mount 16GB pkg. best thing to do is just update to rog 2.05 and have old install packaged menu back.

All the flaws (especially in combat as I see) that are mentioned by these reviewers are laughable. So, what did they expect? It's a JRPG and that's how combat is in these type of games. Again, Ni No Kuni's combat has some fresh ideas and it's much more tactical than other similar games.
For sure I didn't see these reviewers being so much "sensitive" when they reviewed the last Final Fantasy game..

I say this as someone who really likes Ni no Kuni.

You must be smoking the wrong shit if you can't see that the combat system is inferior to many other JRPGs. Not all by a long shot, but many. Even the system for telling your squad what to do is awkward at best. You might want to try playing a few more JRPGs before making the outrageous statement that the combat system in Ni no Kuni is anything other than sub-par.

And no, it doesn't really have any fresh ideas for combat.

How much space do I need to install? After putting the files on the internal HDD I'm left with 20GB. Is that enough?

well game in PKG form is 21.6GB, and PKGs can extract to larger size... so you need at least 23-24GB for install

can't you install part one of the pkg first and then delete it, afterwards installing the second?

I can't seem to figure it out. I did the reactpsn thing, I installed the pkgs (I had to manually install both), I logged in to PSN (since I was asked to do when I tried to start the game), but I get an error saying copyright info is invalid. I assume reactpsn didn't do what it was supposed to do. I tried doing the reactpsn thing again (deleted profile and app), but I get the same error.

I'm on rogero CFW 4.30 and latest MM.

edit: I see I also have to activate the my PS3 or something by downloading from the PSN store. When I try it it tells me it needs to download software first. I assume it's a FW update?

I believe the store itself has to download some kind of new store app, or a store update. It is NOT a fw update.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong tho.

Just download the PSN repack (English only) floating around. It works, and there's no need to mess with ReActPSN and such.
