Came home from work Saturday, turned on the PC and it said a necessary device was missing to start Windows. It tried convincing me I didn't have windows installed a few weeks earlier, so I guess I should have seen it coming, but it's still a bitch when it happens.
So I reboot, and it shows all 4 disks in post, but now telling me hal32.dll can't be found, which usually indicates the boot priority is wrong and it's trying to start from a non-system disk. This was confusing me for a bit. So I turned it off and on.. and nope, only 3 HDDs detected, and a necessary device to start windows was missing.

Turned out that when starting the PC from no power, the HDD isn't recognized. But when rebooted, it does see it.. tho it still takes it sweet time. I adjusted the boot priority in the BIOS after rebooting, and was able to get in Windows again.

Bad part is, I always figured my old 320GB drive would be the first to go. One of its partitions is weirdly classified as a system partition, so it made sense to me. Never expected it to be the 1.5TB drive with the actual windows installation.
So I left the PC running from saturday till today, since I would not dare reboot again, and bought me a new 2TB drive. Was saving that money to get an SSD Crying or Very sad .
I could have gotten a 128GB SSD for the money and it would have allowed me to reinstall Windows. But that would also mean I'd have to delete, among other things, 500GB of steam folder.

Now all I get to do is copy over 1.5TB worth of data from the slowest drive in history (70MB/s instead of the 130-ish which it should be able to do (and my other drives can do)) and still not experience the speed of an SSD everyone talks about.

Looks like I'll be busy copying everything for at least 2,5 more hours. Let alone reinstalling Windows, drivers, etc Sad
And please let me be able to use all downloaded steam data after copying.. and not forget to copy saves from My Documents, which will also be deleted. Really wish game companies would use the same folders there to store saves/profiles/screenshots/whatever, and not use /AppData/Roaming .. and My Documents( /My Games/ ) .. and whatever the fuck I'll undoubtedly be forgetting.

/Rant over

tl;dr: drive on the verge of failing, had to waste money on a new one and stuck copying shit for hours.

I actually don't know.. Can't find a confirmation e-mail for it, which means I'll have to look for a receipt. 1 sec.

My most recent HDD is from ~2009, and I always install/uninstall games frequently, so that's one of my fears.
Thankfully I have my 1TB external which I'd use as a temp replacement if that happened Razz

I may have said 1 sec, but I can't find shit in my room. I thought I had a pile of receipts in my desk, but not that one.. Bit confused now.
...
I'm gonna leave that there to show I'm a retard. When I looked in my gmail again, I found it..

I ordered it at 08-Jul-2009. It's a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB (ST315003 41AS)

Didn't see it earlier because apparently I bought a 1TB drive in 2010, so I figured, since that's smaller, I must've bought the 1.5TB later Laughing.

Wasn't the oldest one I have though, still have a 320GB from years before that, that's still doing its work nicely. As it should.

I'm not opposed to that, but it has worked fine for 3,5 years and just started making noises it didn't, and tries to evade detection on booting. I'm not sure if I'll be able to trust him again with my data even after I flash it.

It's a 50/50 chance it'd be recognized by the bios when I reboot after initializing the flashing process anyway Wink.

Might do so for my amusement when I've got everything moved over to the new one. Nearly done. Steam folder took me 4 hours to copy... And I just realized I'm not sure where I've got my win7 dvd. Good times.

Isn't it weird that we buy stuff we don't even remember about later? Laughing I had to look for receipts on gmail too...

Also, two of these 7200.11 barracudas died on me Crying or Very sad, never bought a seagate again.

Yeah, call me stupid, but I may have gotten a Seagate again this time (7200.14 ST2000DM001). I had a choice between Seagate and Western Digital. So far, two WDs failed on me (years back), and this is the first Seagate.

I kind of wanted a second 2TB Samsung Spinpoint, but Samsung and Seagate joined together in this HDD alliance or something and my local shops didn't sell any Samsung drives anymore. Since I was in a hurry to get it replaced, I figured I'd take the chance.

Pretty much done backing everything up now, 4:37AM. Work tomorrow. Found my Windows 7 dvd, but not sure if I want to do that now, since I'll have to disconnect 4 out of 5 HDDs to make sure the Win7 installation doesn't go around saying one of the other drives gets the 100MB system partition for bitsomething.. which is retarded as fuck.

Retire it. Use it as a letter weight. I've lost too much irreplaceable data due to not taking symptoms like that seriously.

1280x1024 really is an underappreciated resolution Laughing

Looks to be going well. Now just have to remove two HDDs from the case, and re-connect the other two. And let windows update run for a few years..

Some hard drives have company warranties up to 3-4 years. Some people have actually made quite a profit in buying broken hdd's cheaply and getting replacements from the company.

So it is worth checking out.

Afraid not. Warranty was 3 years, at 3.5 now (checked seagate's warranty validation site to be sure).

Most is up and running again. Just in time for Path of Exile Open Beta. Unless this other ticking noise is something bad.. but I believe it's just my new drives' heads clicking when parking. Could fix it with firmware, but can't really be bothered anymore for a while.

This windows installation is really starting to piss me off. It keeps losing it's internet connection randomly and can't get it back apart from a reboot. Firefox keeps going in 'not responding' mode (did that before format as well, but not this aggressively).

Guess I'll put everything on hold and hope it can finish downloading Service Pack 1 now. 87MB is a bit of a stretch.. Laughing
Maybe I'll try and reinstall the LAN drivers as well. Can't hurt I guess..

Really not motivated to format again..

Chrome is beginning to get more appealing, yes. And nope, cabled. I hate wireless with a passion. My laptop is not experiencing the loss of internet btw, just the PC.

Oh, also, my phone decided today that it did not want my microSD card to work anymore. So somehow it managed to open up the slot it was in UNDERNEATH the battery. How the actual fuck. Anyway, I put it back in, but now it wants for format it... How about : nope. However, my 35(Laughing)-in-1 card reader does not support microSD.

This is turning out to be a really shitty week. I bet the Seagate I bought will die on me in 3..2..1.. Sad

edit: about new drives ticking. This one does, it's a feature. It can be solved by flashing the firmware Smile

edit2: Oh come on! So I risk all my data by starting the flashing.. it reboots, shows some linux mumbojumbo... and poof! Reboot without flashing. Guess I should be glad it's not bricked.

Small update. I've given up on updating the firmware.. Apparently the CC4B version can't be updated to CC4H. Guess I'll have to resort to using something like Crystalmark to get rid of this APM sound; http://vimeo.com/39254219. (not my video, but the exact same sound)
