Remake of the one monkey mentioned:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078753/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1092082/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0287535/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365675/

some other ones playing during WW1, but not so much concentrating on the battles itself:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568911/ (even though it's about a horse)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110322/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0344510/ (with Audrey Tautou, nuff said Razz )

A Very Long Engagement is excellent. It is set during WW1 but it is not really a war movie. It also has Jodie Foster speaking fluent French.

I think there is a nice saturation of WW2 films, but it seems The Great War has been neglected somewhat in comparison. Smile Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

There's one (italian) which is very good but I don't know if there are English subtitles available Sad http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052861/
It's very comedic though, despite the sadness of the war. Something like Life is Beautiful
