I haven't had any more problems since I went back to using the external HDD.
It can be slow sometimes, and the book takes a few seconds to load, but it doesn't freeze.

Seems like the freezing problems are mainly on fat systems and specific ext hdd's.
In other news, this game is so addictive I just can't put it down. I bought my PS3 several years away just for the Show. Now this is also a game I would the same thing.
p.s. I can't get enough of the spectacular voiceover of Mr. Drippy.

the 1 minute freeze only happens when you play from external,
any other freezes that happen, will do so both on internal and external.
and yea, freezes with ps3 games are such a random thing, its horribly annoying.
person a may have game x freeze constantly, while person b may have game y freeze constantly and game x not even once.
i had games that freeze for many people never freeze on me and also some games freeze hundreds of times where i couldnt find a single entry online of it happen to anyone else.
the most extreme case i had was infamous 2, where every few hrs there would be a spot i had to repeat 10+ times so it wouldnt freeze once, the last spot i reached i retried over 20 times and it would always freeze at the same spot give or take 10 seconds, so i gave up on the game and never finished it.
the ps3 game freezes are so fucking random and non-reproducible on other consoles that there is no solution to them, and it is one of the main reasons why i use my 360 for all multi-platform games as in 5 years of owning both consoles, the 360 froze on me only 3-4 times while the ps3 froze atleast 200+ times.

It's random. I have only 10 secs freeze when I open the book, no other freezes anywhere or system hangups. 120gb slim/ext Samsung.
As cyclonefr posted before, try :
1) Payload set to Standard.
2) BD Mirror Off/On.
3) Latest version of MM.
4) Internal.
5) Other external HDD.
People with retail disc have freezes too.

The open the book freeze, do you mean when you open the actual book with lots of pages and lore or just the magic page that you open by pressing square? |
I have the 10 secs freeze on the first screen after I've chosen the book in the main menu. After that pages/chapters load instantly.

I didn't have any freezes on external but the magic book took about 40-50 secs to open ...... so I put it on my internal drive, the book opened straight away then but I had 3 hard freezes in less than 1 hour, so I'm back playing it externally where I still haven't had 1 freeze yet .... touch wood

yeah, the crashes seem to be occuring at random for everyone, no matter what PS3 (slim, fat) or internal or external.
Personally, I updated my Playstation from 3.55 kmeaw to Rogero cfw 4.30 v2.05 just to play this game. However, after first playing it for like an hour, I got a freeze... Rebooted it, played half an hour, got another freeze... But this time, it corrupted my entire hdd PS3 kept restarting, restoring system file or whatever, restart again, restore again etc... Couldn't boot to XMB, so had to go to recovery and format my hdd
At first, I thought it was perhaps my own fault; perhaps I shut down the PS3 while the orange light (which indicates writing to hdd) was still blinking. However, after reinstalling everything, booting up the game, playing for over 2 hours with no problem, it froze again. This time, I made sure that I didn't turn off the Playstation if the light was still blinking; I checked it carefully, no lights, turned it off, waited, turned it back on again and there ya go, keeps restoring and restarting again..... Had to format hdd again, so until some sort of fix gets released, I'm not playing this game anymore, despite how awesome I find it to be.
Just be sure to make some backups of saves etc before this happens to you as well
Also, it appears that the "restoring file system" upon startup after a freeze is newly implemented after fw 4.00; does anyone know how to make sure it actually works? I mean, I had a handful of freezes with other games before, but then, I just turned off the PS3, turned it back on and everything was fine. Is there perhaps a way to make sure that nothing gets corrupted (or at least, the system doesn't keep "restoring" the file system) after a freeze (of any other game for that matter).
Really not pleased if my entire hdd gets wiped out after any freeze occurs, whatever game I was playing....

you shouldve read a few posts above,
the restore file system function is shit as it will often fail and force you to format your hdd...

yea, experienced that myself as well...
however, if the PS3 were to ever freeze, there is no way of avoiding it, right? I mean, now that I updated to cfw 4.30, the restore file system always pops up if the PS3 didn't shut down correctly... or is there a way to just skip this and go to XMB right away? I believed I pressed O to skip multiple times as well, but then the system just restarts, the same message pops up, and there's really not much I can do..

I had the restore file system on the 1st freeze when it was on internal, the "restore file sstem" took about 5 minutes ...... but then on the 2nd freeze, I got the "restore file system" again and I managed to cancel myself out of doing it, and didn't have to do it again ...... I think I just pressed the cancel button.
Since going back to external I haven't had a problem ....... yet, apart from the magic book taking 40 seconds to load and I can live with that

The freezing also corrupted my file system, had to reformat my hdd losing all my save games, which is pretty annoying, I was stuck in a restore loop, tried restoring database/default settings, didn't help. I was playing from internal, not sure if that's related in anyway, but this game does freeze alot, I recommend ppl to back up their saves, since powering off ps3 like this are never good, had to learn from the hard way.

I believe it doesn't, since no trusted person (reviewers and such) claimed to have freezing issues. There are claims of freezing in some "legit" forums, but as a far as we know they could be playing a pirated copy too.
