I'm looking for games similar to UFO Aftermath, Aftershock and Afterlight. By similar I mean tactical, squad based and real time. I know there are some around that are turn based, but I'm looking for real time + smart pause ones. And also not RTS like Warcraft or Command and Conquer.

Suggestions?

Jagged Alliance Back in Action is one I recall clearly. And some russian clones like Brigade E5, 7.62 but they might be a little rough.

the new jagged alliances are very simplified
should get the original jagged alliance 2 with 1.13 community patch

silent storm
fallout tactics
frozen synapse

xenonauts is also promising but i don't know if it's complete yet
the alpha has been on desura for over a year

it's frustrating how rarely turn based tactical games succeed
i hope wasteland2 gets it right

These are all turn based, except for the new Jagged Alliance and Brigade E5 / 7.62. I'm looking for real time + smart pause and not turn based.

Fallout Tactics it's not TB. It has the option, but it's one of the first RTT to be played with active pause.

7.62 High Calibre with the Blue Sun Mod is the best squad-based combat you'll find.

It's still considered a turn-based game. You had three options: Continuous Turn-Based, Individual Turn-Based, and Squad Turn-Based.

Why do people keep recommending turn based games? :S It's obvious he doesn't want them..

Check out Brigade E5, 7.62 High calibre and Planet Alcatraz.

You could try gangland, although it's not so much with aliens but well....gangsters.
It's a fun little game that has a couple of years. Or you could try soldiers of anarchy, post apocalyptic setting, low budget game (doesn't mean it's total crap tho).

X-Com: Apocalypse. You get the option to go into turn-based or RTwP when starting a ground mission.

If you count RPGs as well, then there's Darklands, the Infinity Engine games and Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2.
