Problem is its appealing to people who used to hate the original Roddenberry-esq era. A few friends of mine who've always hated everything star trek loved the new one.

So we'll just have to accept that one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises ever is currently being fubared for cash.

Huuuuge Star Trek fan! Sure they fucked up the story with the "first" movie, but it was still great entertainment and a great movie, looking forward to this one.

They should have created a new series with these actors. Movies should have come later. Right now they won't have the same
emotional resonance as the original series did. That is why the death scene in Khan was so poignant and touching (and I say this as a non-Star Trek fan).
Just the fact that I knew there was an established relationship in the original series in the 60's was enough to make it more plausible.
Here in the reboot, Spock and Kirk acted like assholes towards each other. Don't expect anyone to buy them "taking a bullet or sacrificing bla bla" after a single movie.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

looking out for this one, as a big fan of the first movie, I have high hopes for this.

Anyone that watches Conan, they are constantly promoting it and doing funny skits on it. They had Zachary Quinto on a few nights ago... good shite.

Are anyone even willing to spend the money required to make a decent space scifi show anymore? Nowadays series have with next to no cgi and what cgi there is is pretty terrible.

Because there's no money for tv sci-fi shows.
there's no audience for it. Sad
it's all sit-coms that dominate the airwaves.
Fringe was barely holding on.
Revolution is pseudo sci-fi.
What else is there? Stargate is over.
Last star trek tv series got blasted.
Alphas is an OK sci-fi show.
Nothing else really exists. Sad
Sci-fi is expensive. even with shitty cgi. it's still expensive. Sad

how on earth did they manage it before? I can't believe it was any better then.

I haven't watched alphas, but isn't that the usual crap with little to no cgi? from reading the show description it sounds a little like an american misfits.

There are no scifi shows since most people wouldn't accept a CGI-less scifi show. Look at Babylon 5 and try to think of that in 2012. A big portion of the current audience would call it crap since it wouldn't even begin to compare to a 300million dollar CGI fest of a movie.

Alphas isn't really about effects etc.

He is really playing Khan Mitchell, they are just mixing the 2 stories together.

You don't need CGI all the time. Take Stargate for example. The illusion of other planets is enough to keep people entertained and many CGI scenes can be used multiple times. Well, as long as they keep them a bit apart so it doesn't look really cheap. The longer we go without a series like that the worse it will be if someone tries again.

But Babylong 5 and Star Trek sure would be cool to have. With the old series style, and not this new "realistic" crap.

You forgot Falling Skies Smile

What about Supernatural? Ive never watched it, but ain't that sci fi as well?

Haven too, however that dosent require many special effects, its basicly a regular show with a sci fi/mystery plot.

First one was an awful dump on one of my favorite series (especially the characters) - so I'm not going to bother with this in the cinema. I loathe the Abrams style - and I very much doubt this will be any different - but I might catch it someday with a BR rip.

Well, if Cumberbatch plays his part like he plays Sherlock, that alone will surely make it worth watching Smile

i really hope not. the last season of sherlock was the weakest. really poor writing too. Sad

first was good stuff. entertaining. dr who like epic dialogue. but season 2. hounds of baskervilles was pretty much the worst of the whole. Sad really disappoint. cumberbatch can act. so i hope he does a good role and doesn't do some real stupid sherlock shit. he's not someone who should be type cast.

Thats when you realize that a brand is just a brand, and can be used at the whim of the studios as long as there is money to be made.

I've enjoyed the first reboot (because timeline here, timeline there thats what it is, no matter how many comics you write about how to fit it in the canon, the characters are just different)but something felt awfully wrong the whole time.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a448123/jj-abrams-grants-terminally-ill-fans-wish-to-see-star-trek-sequel.html

Quote:
JJ Abrams has granted a dying Star Trek fan's wish to see the upcoming film Star Trek into Darkness ....

Abrams extended an invitation to a terminally ill man identified only as 'Dan', whose friends had appealed for a chance for him to see the movie via an internet campaign.

Dan, who is described as a huge fan of the Star Trek series and a movie buff, has been suffering from two forms of cancer over the past three years. He was recently informed that he has only weeks to live, according to a post made by a friend on Reddit.

Abrams became aware of the internet campaign and reached out to Dan personally, reportedly inviting him and his wife to see an unfinished version of Star Trek into Darkness at a special private screening.

In a post on Reddit, Dan's wife wrote: "Hi everyone, it's Daniel's wife, we are of course sworn to secrecy, but we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it immensely as a film and as a gesture... Also, it was truly amazing that a filmmaker so secretive as JJ Abrams was kind enough to show this to us.

"It is also so wonderful for his friends and his family to finally hear some good news from us, they know how important [the] film is to Daniel and could not think of a better way to please him. So this gesture really has brought a lot of smiles all around. It was a wonderful thing to see with Daniel and a wonderful thing to see Daniel enjoy - Making someone as ill as he is smile for any length of time really makes a difference. (At this point making me smile is good too).

She went on to thank Abrams, saying: "We were so touched when [Abrams] was concerned that we wouldn't 100% enjoy the screening as it's still being worked on... Be assured we enjoyed it 110%!"

Star Trek into Darkness is set for release on May 17, 2013.

poor writing + poor directing = poor performance

in the first 3 eps he was sharp and eccentric. in the later ones he was less sharp and less eccentric (more forced on the acting). so his performance was limited by the script. unless he can zone into the character so readily that he needn't a script and can improvise the brilliance of sherlock on the spot. Rolling Eyes

he's a good actor. his resume is pretty impressive. and it varies. would hate for the next baddie in star trek to be sherlock who entered a dark place in his mind and is now killing everyone because he's oh so brilliant. Laughing
