|
 |
I know its an old game but I have just started playing it and have a few questions should any veteran players be kind enough to answer.
1. Game play: being new to the game I am starting off in sandbox mode, however every time I smash my enemies face in the game essentially ends. There seems to be no way to just ignore him, as he starts the aggression first, so obviously I have to retaliate. Is there no true sandbox mode where I can build/explore at my own pace? So I can learn the game with no distractions? If so how?
2.Buying the game: I am going to buy this version.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Age-Empires-III-Complete-Collection/dp/B002MUO6CE/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1356506035&sr=1-1
Does anyone know if this comes with a half way decent manual? Or just a crappy on disk manual or perhaps none at all?
3.Similar games: Are there any similar games, preferably with less concentration on warfare and more on management/building/collecting resources and generally researching new technologies?
I have tried and loved:
All the ANNO games
Most of the Settlers games
Grand ages Rome
Tried and liked a bit
AOE 2
Empire Earth
Rise of Nations
The Stronghold series
The Settlers types are what I really love so nay suggestions along those lines would be most appreciated. I should also mention I am not keen on modern or futuristic settings in games, preferring an historic or fantasy setting.
There are a few m ore games I have tried over the years, but please feel free to suggest others, and/or answer my other questions.
Thanks for your time.

Its a standard albeit bit wider dvd case, Im pretty sure theres no proper game manual manual in there, maybe a quickstart sheet or something like that. not sure about on disk manual. Would guess there is, else Im sure you can find the original manual pdfs on google.
I think theres a cease fire mode for skirmish, but only for 30 mins if I remember correctly.
Tropico series., if youre not into the 2d thing get 3 or 4.

sigh. I miss RTS.
If you liked the AgeOf games, Age of Mythology is a good one to run through. Has a fun, very long campaign.

Yup AOM is one of the best out there. 2nd best in the AgeOf series, right behind AOE2 imo. There should be an option to set treaty timer, max is 45mins or something crazy like that if I remember correctly. Either way, start as sandbox, set timer, and you should have plenty of time to mess around. Also you don't have to kill him off...as long as he has 1 building left, AI would surrender but they need your approval.

Yes but when he asks to surrender whichever option I choose the game ends (or at least I am pretty sure it did) I want to continue, if I allow my opponent to continue attacking me will he eventually wipe me out even if I have the setting on 'easiest' ? Or will he just mount forays into my territory but not actually destroy my city centre?
I really do not want to rush though all the various ages but take each one slowly learning as I go.
Also @Badrien I assume the game is not worth buying for the manual, perhaps I am better of with a strategy guide?
Any other games suggestions/advice is appreciated. As I get older I really struggle for games that interest me, but I do love ANNO/Settlers types.

The game really is not that hard, I don't think you'll need a manual or strategy guide, unless it is purely for collection sake.
