7. Alex Cross
6. The Lorax
5. This Means War
4. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
3. Hyde Park on Hudson
2. John Carter
1. Cloud Atlas |
I've only seen Cloud Atlas from these lists, but Time is surely trolling again. Cloud Atlas is the worst movie of the year (I can understand not liking it, even calling it bad, but the worst of all? please), and RE: Retribution, Silent Hill 3D, etc not only are better, they do not even belong to the "worst" list?
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

A fail list, but I do agree Cloud Atlas may be the worst film of the year. I thought it was terrible and actually agree with Mania's reviewer, who gave it an F rating.

Why was John Carter bad? I kinda liked it... It might not be the best of the best, but to be one of the worst?

At this point I am pretty sure news organizations post controversial stuff like that on purpose to get more clicks and thusly more ad revenue.

Yes, and I am sure some student films are worst than the RE shit, but no one here expects to see them on such a list, do they? RE is not a flick you can put in the same category as the ones here. Although, I wouldn't put Vampire Hunter there either. Haven't seen Cloud Atlas, but for the most part, I agree with the list. I would substitute Vampire Hunter with Skyfall.

ZDT is taking a lot of praise. My guess is, it will end up being split, either people will love it or hate it.

Maybe you think so but consider you have seen let's say 40 movies this year and indeed found it to be the worst, while the Time critic has seen every.single.movie of the year as part of her job. There's just no way she legitimately found Cloud Atlas to be worse than the hundreds of bad movies she has watched. You know some movies are so bad that you skip them? She had to watch them all!

She had to watch them but she didn't have to put them in this list. Otherwise it would be filled with student films and arthouse crap. Of course she takes anticipation as a prerequisite of putting them here. Admit it, you are just butthurt because she put a film in there you oh so loved.

No not really. And I don't think that eg RE: Retribution is an art house movie. It's very mainstream, it's shit, and it's not there. Explain that?

Like I said, it is a direct to DVD type of shit. Can you honestly say that someone was anticipating it in cinema? Then again, what is Vampire Hunter doing there?
BTW, Resident Evil mainstream? Who the fuck goes to see that crap? To test your claim, ask your friends, better yet, female friends if they have heard of it. Report back with the answer.

If it's as bad as people say i'd guess it's a failed attempt to mainstream the series. I haven't seen a RE since the third or something, so i have no clue what has happened in the last movies.

It grossed over 200mil worldwide. More than Cloud Atlas + Anna Karenina combined. It's definitely more mainstream than most of that list.
Anna Karenina on the other hand I'm sure none of my friends will watch, male or female. And the box office confirms its low popularity. Much lower than RE RE yet it made the list.
RE RE should have been on the worst list, it's just that the "critic" that wrote this list didn't really do much investigation. At least that what it feels to me.

Yeah, Leo must have a weird definition of what mainstream is if he thinks it depends on whether the female moviegoers know of it. (My male friends do know of it btw and they are not really gamers).
From Wikipedia:
Quote: | Mainstream films can best be defined as commercial films that are made by major entertainment studios or companies that are owned by international media conglomerates. Because of better financing, these films can afford more expensive actors, wide releases or limited releases, and are sold at popular retail stores. This has become known as the studio system. Films made by major studios or companies that are not owned by a media conglomerate but are distributed by a company owned by a media conglomerate (see Lucasfilm) are also considered to be mainstream and are often referred to as mainstream independent films. Companies that are completely independent, such as Lionsgate, also produce mainstream films, from a cultural standpoint, but independent of the studio system. The alternative to mainstream films are sub genre films that appeal to a certain audience, such as African American films. Low budget films, art films, and experimental films are often the starting point for entertainers who wish to enter into the mainstream circuit or a sub genre circuit. Mainstream films are targeted for all cultures and audiences, with the dominating culture and audience being the primary marketing focus, while sub genre films are marketed towards only one specific culture and audience. Mainstream films often recruit talent from all film genres and backgrounds. |
Cloud Atlas is much more of an arthouse type of film (technically it's "indie") since it targets a more niche market than eg Batman, Resident Evil etc.) Google Cloud Atlas arthouse and see how many times it has been described as having those characteristics.
And RE is not straight to video material. Its quality (crap) does not make it straight to video. I mean Transformers 2 is a worse film that all RE films in my opinion, but I wouldn't call it straight to video.

I define mainstream cinema as something that attempts to wink at as much wider audience as possible, as something that is widely known among the public. From my experience, women tend to be a better test in that area. This Means War is a mainstream movie.
Resident Evil is clearly only attempting to wink at the adolescent or even pubescent gamer boys.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=residentevil5.htm
US audience seems to agree with me, as RE did a mere 45mil, and I am sure a lot of it has to do with the titled actresses: Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Michelle Rodriguez. "OMG OMG action flick with hot dudettes".
High budget does not mean a film is mainstream. Was Inception mainstream? It might have been intriguing to the mainstream, but hardly. The Batman films, on the other hand, were so good, that they turned a comic book subgenre into a mainstream experience.

BTW, I might have worded my objection incorrectly. Mainstream or not does not define whether a film is good or bad. I just can't see a RE film in such lists. Much like you wouldn't put a Scary Movie in there or American Pie. That one was bad too, but no one here complains it's not on the list.

As I already said you seem to have a unique understanding of what mainstream means. That's cool, but for the sake of discussion you need to accept the more mainstream definition of mainstream.
