Still better than what was on that list. Dishonored promised the moon in all the previews and ended up showing just a fraction of
what it was capable of which was good but not great so the GoTY couldn't have gone to a better game/(hybrid according to you ).
Btw where can I download the VGA 2012 reveals/trailers? Can't seem to find any decent links for it
1 and 2 are still amazing.

As far as I'm concerned MotN wipes the floor with many of the big titles this year. It's simply one of the best stealth games ever. Just because it looks like some small side-scrolling game, it doesn't mean it shouldn't get such awards. It's a very well paced, designed, balanced game with a really nice artstyle and soundtrack and a simple, but interesting story (especially the lore you discover through collectibles). It's a game of the same caliber as Bastion. That one did win a lot of awards, but not something as big as general GOTY. I understand why they don't, but it's wrong. Any game should be able to win such awards.

Again though, as a game (for a game of the year award) any of those crush it. What do you actually do in TWD as a game? Walk around, do a QTE every now and then, and make choices that funnel you down only a few paths anyway. The story is great, but story does not a game make. Those in that list trounce TWD in almost every respect - as games. |
I haven't played XCOM Enemy Unknown, Black Mesa and & Risen 2 from the list you have provided, so I wouldn't be able to comment on them.
Dark Souls would have definitely been Game of the Year, but only for the PC category. Since it originally released last year. Also, this game had immensely deep gameplay elements, which was easily it's strongest aspect. But coming to your own quote "The story is great, but story does not a game make". Similarly, Gameplay alone wouldn't constitute to a game being great. The storyline was wafer thin for this title.
Borderlands 2 was, nay, is great fun in co-op. We still enjoy playing it and continue to do a second play-through. But where's the story? All I keep doing is blowing stuff up, running errands, leveling up, rise and repeat. GOTY? Sure, if you like.
Max Payne 3. Again, a highly promising game with rich visuals and fantastic story narration. However, it got repetitive real fast and dragged too much at times.
Sleeping Dogs. I won't lie. This game was probably the most entertaining game for this year. Certainly unexpected, but definitely an excellent game of the year contender. Great voice acting, amazing visuals and gameplay.
Here's why I feel The Walking Dead was an excellent title and I instantly voted it to be the game of the year. This year, in general, was quite disappointing. We had so many hyped up AAA titles from some of the major studios. The handful that you have listed above were the only ones that might have stood out. But The Walking Dead wasn't hyped, it wasn't from a major studio, it didn't have lush visuals, it didn't have deep gameplay, BUT it had a captivating way of involving a player into the game. Sure, all it did was point-and-click, but it also gave the player an opportunity to make their own choices. It had fantastic story and characters, which were built over 5 episodes. Each episode managed to create tension, suspense, sense of achievement, betrayal, disappointment etc. You would literally feel the need to crave for the next episode. Ask this to anyone who has played this game and they can testify.
It was this concept of having a game spread out over 5 episodes, with the notion of having an unpredictable outcome of your choices, was what made this game such a delightful experience. The voice acting and character building is probably one of the best I have seen this year. And it's not just for 'a' particular character, but it was almost for every single cast added along the way. They felt completely natural. All of this coming from a relatively unknown studio.
I'm not against any other game winning the Game of the Year title. It's a subjective choice. So my choice wouldn't be the same as yours. But I wanted to get a response from trollpower, which I had anticipated ("but not this POS "watch and sometimes click" adventure..."), of why it would mount to a face-palming.

Not as terrible rewards as I expected. Although I really did enjoy Walking Dead and its #2 best game for me this year, I don't think it deserved GOTY. There were much larger and much more complex titles that should have gotten it.
It has great story & characters, but not much else.
But in the end, VGAs are probably the awards with the least meaning, so who cares.

Apart from the melee combat, I truly enjoyed Risen 2. I think it was fantastic tbh.
