Since I have an old ass Samsung SDTV (21"), I am looking into getting a bigger, LED TV (hopefully as soon as I can/have some money Razz). And I am freakin' confused, what is the difference between HD Ready and Full HD TVs? I know HD Ready can show 720p and 1080i, while Full HD shows 1080p. But, is there a big difference between 1080i and 1080p? Cause HD Ready TVs are much cheaper for larger sizes than Full HD.

From what i understand. Full HD means your panel is a true 1080p Native resolution. HD ready usually means that your TV will accept all HD inputs, but the panel is not actually 1080p Native resolution.

I see. So the difference is not that big for games, right? HD Ready would do just fine?

For the current consoles? Yes, because they don't even really do 720p properly. That said, 1080p TV's aren't that much more expensive and will allow you to watch Blurays properly as well for example. 1080i is useless; interlaced means that rather than each frame being 1920x1080, they're 1920x540, with the vertical lines alternating to provide you with the full image.

Current gen is almost over, so have that in mind. Next gen might provide better resolutions. And do you play from your computer to watch movies etc?

Also if you only go for 32" then fake hd is as good. It´s too small to make a big difference.

The big thing about 1080p and 720p and even 4K resolutions is the viewing distance and screen size ratio. If your TV is less than a 50 inch and your like 8 feet away you will barely notice a difference between 1080p and 720p. Vs say a 100 inch projector where you would notice. Basically your eyes can only see so much.

This topic was relevant 3-5 years ago. Do not buy a 720p HDTV, it's like burning money.

They have budget 1080p 40" HDTVs that go for like 300-400$, they don't have as much of smart TV bloat, but they have solid picture quality, and that's what matters the most.

There's no magic number though. my 46" TV is about 2.5m (that's about 8ft) away and I certainly do see the difference between this and the 720p/42" I had there before. Everybody's eyes are different.

Intel_NVIDIA is right though, the price difference is negligible unless you go for absolute budget models.

Ever since I got my 51" every xbox game looks pretty shitty... but its not true what you say Werelds; most 360 games are actually 720p, but sadly some of the big titles aren't such as COD series.

That's because some of those big titles want to do one of two things (and in some cases even both):
- Hit 60 FPS
- Do proper AA instead of VaselineAA (post-AA)

The only native 720p game that does proper AA instead of some post-AA I can think of right now is Batman: AA; City dropped the AA for performance reasons. The damn thing just can't handle 720p/2xAA without dropping frames Smile
