Total Recall 2012 - 2/5
As a huge fan of verhovens classic I went into this without much expectations other than to get my dose of sci-fi.
Some of the backstory was done better in the new version, I liked the political touch and the fact that workers were exploited by a big bad corporation etc etc
Halfway through the movie I was enjoing it more than I thought, there were some blade runner vibes and at one point I thought of the old pc game beneath a steel sky.
But then came the ending and really shat on what could've been a decent sci-fi action. Plot holes galore, cate beckinsale wasnt a believeable bad guy and I kept hoping to see michael ironside pop his ugly mug. Even the guy who played cohaagen was miscast and had nothing on the old cohaagen from total recall 90.
A mindnumbingly stupid film, made by one of the worst hacks in Hollywood.
Dont mess with God, he can impregnate your girlfriend/wife without taking his pants off!

I've seen it, here's a quote
Quote: | Cloud Atlas- 10/10
The best movie I've seen in years, masterfully crafted, acted and shot. Beautiful locations, excellent acting by Hanks, Berry and ESPECIALLY Ben Whishaw (if he doesn't get an Oscar for that role, the world is fucked up). I was amazed throughout the whole movie, and I wish it would have lasted a little longer. |

I love the "What I learned from watching" threads...
The movie is horrible. It's such a horrible mess. I'd give it 3/10.

End of Watch 5/10. Didn't like the two main actors, they're far too nerdy to be believable as tough cops. Tries way too hard to be "cool" and "tough" which just makes it really silly. Nowhere near an episode of The Shield or Southland.
Prometheus 6.5/10. Could have been a lot better with characters that you actually cared for. Stupid but entertaining (for us who's starving for sci-fi "horror").

My most anticipated movie of the year. I really really wanted it to be a 11/10(!) movie but I am simply unable to rate it right now. It is flawed but there's greatness in it as well. I believe I had different expectations, and got something else. Basically I thought the character connections through the generations/stories would be stronger and also/to give a simple example couples that couldn't end up together in one story would end up in a future one, giving them a happy ending.
But to pinpoint how everyone was connected was apparently not what the movie wanted to do, it was more like how 1) there are always the strong taking advantage of the weak (didn't really expect it) and 2) we are afraid of the different (nope, didn't expect this at all) and 3) how our actions can shape the future (that WAS what I expected the movie to be about), and also of course since the concept of reusing the same actors for different stories does not exist in the book (the concept of actors is not compatible with a book in the first place!), the "couples (aka actors) eventually getting together" thing was not (always) possible either (although they did attempt it).
So is it a 7/10 movie? 8/10? 9/10?! I really don't know. I'll have to watch it again and I pray that the Wachowskis (and Tykwer of course) record a commentary for the home media release (unlikely..?) |
A movie everybody should watch. Even if you don't like it, you'll know you have seen a movie that at least DID try to be something meaningful and you'll certainly appreciate the passion of its filmmakers to make it (the Wachowskis put $7M of their own money in it and waived their fees).

The only movie in which Renner was decent was Hurt Locker.

havent seen it yet, but i couldnt imagine Jeremy Renner doing anything good. He is a freakign B-Actor and never did anything good. Matt Damon is an acting god in comparison. |
I don't think it was Renner's fault. The script was completely moronic. No matter how good an actor is, when given a bad script, there is nothing he or she can do. Rachel Weisz is a good actress. Edward Norton is a fantastic actor. But they also seem like B-actors here. The whole thing is horrible. Like two completely different plots, one goes nowhere, the other is just pouring bad exposition, and then they somehow intertwine, and it turns even worse.
It is supposedly penned by Tony Gilroy, which also wrote the other Bourne films, but this feels nothing like them.
I can't but wonder if it wouldn't have been much better if it was an entity of its own, rather than trying to shoehorn it into a much superior franchise.

But that movie was crap, not sure why people liked it. There are way better movies out there. (Didn't even deserve all those oscars)
