Come to think of it, there aren't any popular modern bands that would come to my mind right now.
I think there are two main factors causing this:
1. Internet ruined everything. 
More and more people don't care about mainstream music anymore, so most of the decent bands get niche'd pretty soon in genre they belong to, and won't ever get as popular as it was possible in pre-internet era.
2. Everything hitting the mainstream is more or less "manufactured" right now, and I guess it's ... cheaper?... easier?... for record label to manufacture one person's success than group of people's.
