As vehemently opposed to tacking on needless multiplayer modes as I am, even I have to admit Elite could only be improved by adding multiplayer. As long as you're not forced into "partying!11 lololz" then I'm all for it. Just like the Euro Truck series; imagine doing deliveries around Europe and that every truck you see on the road is being driven by another player somewhere --- or bidding for cargo deliveries? That kind of multiplayer I am definitely all for. Same with Elite and Freelancer and Star Citizen Smile

I disagree. Can you imagine a 2014 Elite sequel without multi player? It will be so awesome to share the elite experience with other players.

I can imagine all too well I have played eve-online for 6 years. Just saying that elite for everybody is a great memory and single player experience. Adding other people to play with invariably makes the experience different.

Sounds great I like cooperative multi-player game play, but it would suck if a bunch of guys ganged up and keep on driving their trucks into yours just because they can. =) Of course this all depends on how the developers will implement pvp.

Yeah, Paul and I were talking about it on Skype and I completely agree -- there's always the griefing cunt aspect of multiplayer and it would certainly ruin the game if a bunch of dickweeds just wanted to ram you off the road. The IDEA sounds really good to me .. but the execution of this idea would certainly need a lot of work and it would depend on people *gasp* not actually being dicks online Very Happy

Right so before you know it they will have to decide how they create their sandbox universe, will you have a pvp flag, or pvp and pve servers, private servers ? will you have mmo style loging in to a central server with authentication etc. As said I am curious how Braben will tackle this issue.

I sometimes forget that not all people play fair. The griefing aspect of multiplayer i definitely don't want to be part of.

I don't think the 80's memory of elite will ever be recreated. I was 14 at the time and living in a very different technology time. It's got to evolve but i do pray it's not multiplayer compulsory.

The thing about Elite (or Frontier or Freelancer or Black Prophecy, et al) is the same with EVE -- being a dick is part of it, especially for people playing as a Pirate, but I guess there should be some way to limit HOW much of a dick people can be. In FL, for instance, servers had specific mods installed and restrictions on how players could fight each other -- such as the requirement of having to have a "Pirate" ID card mounted before they could attack non-Pirate ships .. and by being a Pirate, that leaves you open to being attacked by Military and Police also.

I agree. I'm quite positive that it won't be impose.

This is a nice artistic image of a Cobra entering a space station:

Wouldn't it be possible to keep griefing to a minimum with a strong AI police force? If you venture further into unprotected zones you'd be more of a target (unless you buy an escort/go with friends), but aren't (space) pirates by definition griefers? Smile

Personally I would prefer Single Player + Coop with a bunch of friends. Kinda tired of MMO's

Yes, but we don't want to put ourselves in a position to be griefed Razz If we wanted that, we'd be playing EVE and not Elite Razz

Eve is nothing more than a business simulator with some lasers. It is not fun for any newbie, and it doesn't have much 'fun' going for it.

At least Elite you had direct control over your ship, and I dunno, it just felt more 'fun' to me.

I adore space sim games. I adored Frontier, Freelancer and Freespace, all different examples of the genre. But Eve just felt like a chore.

Seems like you and me have been playing different games. I've been playing EVE - on and off - since 2006 and I have around 10.000 PvP kills on www.eve-kill.net. If you think EVE is a chore that's a personal opinion and I can't refute your personal feelings. I do however refute that EVE is nothing more than a business simulator, because I've played it for many years and I've never been involved in the business aspect. You can opt to play EVE just like you want and that is it's strenght.

Now back to discussing Elite, although it is very difficult to discuss a game like Elite, without getting into referals/comparisons with EVE.
