I have a legit copy of winxp sp2(work), which I'd like to try at home. As far as I understand, one needs to have a key (I already have the legit one) and bypass activation. Is this possible?

yup, expect no problems if you have a legit corp key

It's not a corp version. I believe it's a standard xp pro sp2. A64 3800+@2.80 GHz, Mushkin 2x1GB @ 233MHz, Abit AN8 SLI 2 x BFG 7800gtx, Mitsu DP 2070SB 22", Dell 2405FPW 24" Audigy 2 ZS 2 x WD Raptor 74 GB Raid0, 40GB, 120GB HDDs, Plextor PX-716UF, 24x CDRW, DVD 12x PCP&C 510W, Antec 430W

It wont bypass activation, once you have installed it you will get a little Icon on the taskbar saying you have 30 days to activate it. (I just did a re-install myself)

Which files are responsible for winxp pro activation? Could I simply copy the files from an existing xp pro original (updated to sp2) to this new install to stop its activation requests? i think its winlogon.exe and some others that you would have to patch in order to by-pass activation.. correct me if im wrong

quite simply call the number your given and say your doing an upgrade to your computer, they will give you an activation code and your done. You think your the only one in the world who dosn't want to buy a copy for every machine in his house?
