Guys, if I have a retail copy of 7 and now I'm upgrading to 8. Can I still use that 7 license should I want to reinstall?

Pretty much everything that has to do with desktop is identical to Windows 7, so backing up My Documents and AppData should take care not only of your games, but other programs as well.

Do any of the Windows versions require a key during installation? Having the W8 Enterprise ISO downloaded through the MDL forums right now.

I have this Quote: | MICROSOFT.WINDOWS.8.PROFESSIONAL.RTM.X64.ENGLISH.DVD-WZT | and it does require a serial to install.

not sure how it works with enterprise, but with Pro you can enter any serial you find on the web during installation, and then change it later on to legit one (if you buy it) and activate.

I'd like to install 8 separately from 7, to try it out with dual booting - fully possible? Drawbacks? Anything special to keep in mind?
I'm not completely against the idea to just replace 7, since I know I'll end up using 8 down the line anyway, sooner or later. But it would be nice to atleast try it out first..
But simply upgrading from 7 to 8 is not a problem, right? I don't need to reinstall all my programs/games?

What the fuck did i just install? Applications going fullscreen makes this a fucking pain in the ass. If there is no way to turn that off and use programs such as skype the old fashioned way i'll throw this OS as far as i can.

Metros' apps go fullscreen, desktops' goes into window mode if they support it. Closing apps in Metro is pain in the ass too.

i posted this in another thread. people who hate metro, here's a perfect solution.
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158666-start-is-back-beta-3/
Spoiler: | |
Quote: | Restored Desktop to its place With StartIsBack, computer starts to desktop. Always. Unlike other tools, which 'skip' Metro by sending keypresses, StartIsBack loads Metro alternative way and keeps it in its place.
Restored Windows 7 Start Menu and Start Button There are tons of start menu clones (check the thread here), but they're all inferior. StartIsBack restores original Windows 7 start menu (with very special magic). It's NOT a replica, it's 100% original Start Menu as you remember it, with search, drag&drop, customization, etc. Start Menu is shown on Win key, as you expect. Start button is behaving as you remember it.
Disabled hot corners By default, all but charms hot corners are disabled. You can customize which corners to show on desktop. And this works better than in any start menu clones i've tried.
Modified Start Screen Now, we have Start and Start. Start Menu and Start Screen. Both search and start programs. Isn't that schizophrenic? So! Start Screen is no longer Start Screen. It's Apps Screen and shows only Metro programs (optionally). This way, Metro and Desktop experience are separated and Start screen is just a launcher for funny Metro apps, while real work and programs run in Desktop.
Also not in your startmenu replacer No extra services running, no extra processes running, no files patched, no admin rights required, fully translated into your language.

they were probably talking about one of many inferior start menu replacements for win8. "star is back" feels exactly like start menu in win7, and it's only few weeks old and in beta3. final version will be superb.

What about Aero Glass? The new theme looks appalling. Have modders found Aero Glass slumbering within Win8?

Win8 is really not too bad, launching applications is just as fast as with classic start menu. Also I got used to Metro screen when customized it to kinda launcher (similar to Steamgrid display I use to launch games with in Windows 7.
Anyway I rolled back to my Windows 7 image after I experienced various incompatibilities with recent cracked game titles (Borderlands 2, Sleeping Dogs and possibly others). Have they fixed that already? Switching to Win98 compatibility helped, but it also resulted in performance penalty...

Regarding skidrows inability in making cracks compatible with Windows 8, someone else did the job for them
Quote: | http://www.tunngle.net/community/topic/106861-borderlands-2-windows-8-update-6-v113-fix/ |
this fix works for all games that skidrow cracked, using the buddha.dll.

Hmm only reason to upgrade to 8, is the new GUI.. doesn't really have anything other than that over windows 7...
boot time is the same (few people I seen say its faster, installed a fresh 8 install, compared to thier 2 year old install of 7...of course it will boot faster)
File transfer screen new info...a 'ohhh cool' thing you look at like 3 times..then ignore as you minimize every other future file transfer anyway.
So why would I install 8, then have to 3rd party hack to remove the useless GUI to get it back to working like windows 7?
I mean if I want HUGE pointless icons for all my apps, I can just hold control and scroll wheel on windows 7 desktop now to do that, and without needing a seperate screen to hold them:P

There are more under-the-hood improvements to Windows 8 than you might think. WDDM 1.2 offers enhanced multitasking (some application are faster to alt-tab to/from than in previous Windows), or enhanced GPU driver recovery.
Boot time enhancements are very noticeable on lower-end hardware with slow HDD, which is a reason why I have upgraded to Windows 8 all my notebooks/netbooks and older computers. And no, I'm not comparing it with old Win7 install. The netbook had fresh Win7 installed, and whole operation with it was way snappier in Win8 than Win7.
These two are most noticeable differences I saw when I switched back and forth between Win 7 and 8 while testing. Sure the differences isn't as big as XP -> Vista, but they are still there. The only reason why I use Win 7 on my main desktop computer is incompatibility with some games. Once that is resolved there's no reason not to upgrade for me - especially now that I have disk image with fully configured Win 8.
