I don't get anywhere near that kind of blank space on my YT, but the combined white on the sides of the screens is still utterly pointless.

Nevermind. I thought that it's about blank sides... I have it balanced in the middle of the screen without so much of empty screen on the right.

i got fed up with YT messing around with the 720p player size (which i really liked) so i caved in, installed greasemonkey and got a script for it called "Youtube player size options" and now i can (and do) watch all the videos in a 1280x720 player size. That works well on my 1920x1200 desktop.

I don't see what the problem is. Would you prefer the white space be filled with ads, err, I mean "related" videos by retard partners that ask you to rate comment subscribe?
This is the content. Almost any website presenting a single subject (single article, single video, etc) is structured this way. Or perhaps you'd rather have the nonsense that is Metro UI and scroll from left to right?
Oh right, much better to use some shit addon that makes the page even more empty, because making it more empty after complaining about a half-empty page is exactly what the OP wants.
