Well that's not the vibe I got. It's explained who you are right at the start, you're the royal bada...erm protector. What I got out of the intro was a (cliché) "my character's spent so much time with these two (by doing his job well) that he's become Emily's father figure and the Empress' most trusted friend". That was my initial feeling anyway. I didn't need any more background than that, that just about sums up what essentially is pretty cliché as far as storylines go.

Also:

That's what I loved about the game. More vertical level design please.

The Witcher was able to do it, I expect it from this game too. I knew why Geralt was friends with Zoltan, I knew why he loved Triss. I think the story was crap, a typical JJ Abrams style story filled with mysterious things just for the sake of being mysterious.

@Sabin: we are sharing opninions, no need to feel offended.

Why do people keep saying that I'm offended? I most certainly am not. I'm offering an opinion - just because you dislike it doesn't mean it's coming from someone that is offended. You didn't connect with the game, aw, that's a shame. I did. That's all that matters to me Razz

Magnificent isn't it? Far too few games have vertical aspects to them, other than a handful of crates you can jump on. I spent a ludicrous amount of time on that Bridge mission Very Happy Did you jump off the top? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I want to do another stealth playthrough, going to play like that even more because I'm pretty sure I can get through the whole game without ever even touching anyone but the targets Smile

I also did pick up dark vision, but in that video is one of the few occasions where I actually used it, I pretty much only used blink and the added jump height from agility. Should've gone for the achievement for that, but I didn't know about it until I finished the game Laughing

Edit @ Sabin: yes I did, reloaded that part tons of times just to fuck around a bit Laughing

Honestly, with the right level design, this game would give Assassin's Creed a run for its money. Much more timing involved in this one, I love it Razz

Mostly Steel and...something. The one for only using blink (although I'm not sure if Agility counts as magic, I assume it doesn't).

Oh... and as far as backstory goes? A LOT of that depends on HOW you deal with people, usually taking the non-lethal approach (ala; the Grand Regent) results in more information being uncovered.

 Spoiler:

Honestly.. the story made perfect sense to me, every step of the way.

The story has a beginning, middle and end. That's all fine. But you have to take too much for granted. That's what i hate. I still feel like i've watched the second part from a trilogy. Like everyone expect me to know what's going on and i just don't.
I just didn't care that much. SPOILERS Save the girl. Why? What is she to me? The Empress is killed in front of me. The game wants me to care, but without context it's really hard to do so. Loyalists want me to help them. I don't even know whats going on! When the Empress ruled was everything great and now its bad?

I have a hard time accepting everything at face value... I think they tried to use the Heart to explain this things (which is a great idea) but it's not enough...

First thing you see when you start a new game is that Corvo is really close to Emily. If you don't care enough to discover it, why do you complain? All that is in the game, you just have to talk to NPCs and read what game lets you.

Or maybe you are one of those people who skip cutscenes and then complain that story is complicated?

This is exactly opposite for me, I hate being force fed with information. Information discovered on my own is 100x more rewarding.

I'm just gonna start with the basics: have you read any of the white letters that appear at the bottom of the screen when people in your view opened their mouths?

No no no. I did not skip one single cutsceene and read the books/notes like crazy (also what the heart says) to try and get some closure. But it does not happen.

I just cannot get into the story if i don't even have a small outline where its even taking place. Is it earth? Are these city states? Are there countries?

And i envy you if you can get "emotionally" involved with so few info. Sure you can see that the kid likes you, but so what? There's no build up. Oh a cute child runs up to you and wants you to play hide and seek. Awwwwww. Same with the Empress. 5 sec in you learn you work for her, 1 min in you learn she really likes you, 3 mins in she's dead. It's not enough. I was hoping as you play you reveal more and more, but that doesn't really happen. You get stuff about the current situation and some bits about the past. But still, why should i care about the plague? I don't even know what came before!

Play & read more steampunk is all I can say, the game is quite typical for its genre Razz

The story in this is nothing spectacular, it's very cliché in a lot of places but the atmosphere is spot-on and the way you learn things is pretty brilliant (by actually listening in on conversations for example).

Actually, the achievement description is

Finish the game without purchasing any supernatural powers or enhancements

You can't even upgrade blink to the second level.

half life story telling. where you're thrown into action and characters treat you like a god and not some prisoner who is just hired to kill people. Laughing y'know... realism.

it made getting out of prison so fun Very Happy i had revenge in my blood Very Happy

Some backstory to the characters? Some intro into the whole situation? Maybe a brief history of everything? So you get to know characters and the world and thus become more involved! It's kinda like XCOM. When you get your rookie, he means nothing to you, but the more he upgrades, gets better, the more you use him, you start get used to him. When he reaches colonel he's part of the team! If he dies you're almost a bit sad.

Rolling Eyes

Because you aren't a god in this game. With your ability to bend time and all that.

Rolling Eyes yeah if they treated you like a god... it would have a different tone in the game.

and you get all the backstory you want. even granny has a back story. even the thugs have back stories. even some guards... so what kind of back story you're looking for? they explain who corvo is and why he was gone. they only thing they don't explain is his relation to the empress and the little girl and yet all of that becomes clear as you play the game.

and im sure the change in tone and all of that shows the progress of how bad it was before and how bad it was after corvo escaped from prison.

Except XCOM has no story. Not just a sparse one.. but NOTHING. No story. No background. No lore. Aliens weren't here yesterday, oops, they're here today. No reason, no method. The troops you hire are the very worst examples of cannon fodder (no, literally, I mean Cannon Fodder) with no kind of history or reason to any of them, not even the most basic of bios - in fact, they're just faceless pawns when you hire them. You have to CREATE stories for them, you have to CREATE information based on how YOU want to play. I named all my soldiers after people I know, that way I can empathise with them despite their origins being nothing more noteworthy than test-tube babies.

I play on normal. I have just started to play it after small break (busy busy busy) and was helping poor Granny to get rid of 3 gentlemen... is it me or the game is not THAT easy ? They kinda raped me with swords and fire... good I've had free runes and bought Slow time... and it went MUCH better from now on...

No it doesn't seem to, or at least I didn't notice anything.
(But I didn't really kill anyone on that mission so it never got higher than low.)

Yes I forgot about that, there's some of those in the distillery due to that action but they're normally no real threat.
(There's some gang members around to deal with them plus they're blocked off, of course one could also use this to cause a distraction or similar.)
