Yeah. By that i mean games that made you research something you had no interest in before. Here are a couple of exemple for me :
Assassin Creed 2 : Made me research the Italian renaissance period as i liked the atmosphere and setting of the game.
Sleeping Dogs : Made me look into Hong Kong , its lifestyle , history , politics ect
Metal Gear Series : Made me look into various military stuff , nuclear weapons , future weapon technology , PMCs ect , MIC ect
Deus Ex : Made me look into politics and various groups (FEMA , Trilateral Comission , UN ect).
Those are the ones on top of my head.

Rome: Total War made me interested in classical history and Empire made me research the period.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

Good pick. I liked LA Noire for that reason too. It certainly was well done when it comes to the atmosphere of the time period.

Hearts of iron, Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings and Victoria, to some degree civilization. You learn a ton ingame and I've looked up so many nations, wars, cultures, religions etc. Fantastic stuff!

nanotechnology is not (limited to) future weapons technology
But I fully agree, those 2 games were the ones that "teached" me some really cool shit.
Calling nastasha on MGS with a particular weapon equipped to hear her explanation and some other cool stuff (like the coriolis effect on a bullet when you called her on the sniper wolf duel), master miller's lectures...
And Deus Ex on a whole, so much win

Civilization, for teaching me about famous rulers and cultures, technological progression and its effects, about warfare and politics and construction, famous landmarks, and much more.
Pools of Radiance and the AD&D series, for teaching me about things like "constitution" and "charisma," about tactical considerations and teamwork, and about a multitude of mythical monsters and beasts.
Shogun and Medieval Total War, for Japanese and European history, real-time tactics, military concepts, and the joys of terrain. Also taught me the value of investment and grooming, etc.
Europa Universalis for teaching me grand strategy, history, politics, economics, and how it all ties together. Also, the value of reading manuals and guides, and of the benefits of never giving up on something.
And of course, the best of all: The Oregon Trail. Which taught me that life used to be pretty rough and that survival skills never go out of style.

C64 text based adventures. Eric the Viking, Hobbit, etc... helped me learn an english language to a some degree. You started playing a game and had to figure out what words did the game recognize (examine, search, inspect and so on).
World of tanks too since i became interested in the WWII machinery and similar stuff.

The Total War games made me a little more interested in their time periods. Especially Napoleon and Empire, my prior knowledge of those eras was basically 'men in stupid looking uniforms standing in a line and shooting each other'.

Anything from Magnetic Scrolls and Sierra in the early 80's. Can't say i've spent much time in school at all during my life, but playing games taught me decent enough english, they were really the driving force.
Any game that i've modded has increased my understanding of photoshop, art and 3D modelling.
Historical games usually makes me want to read books about that particular time period. Total War series for example.
