And I remember Leo arguing about consistency and app standards on android, but on windows, who needs them.

The fuck are you talking about? So far, the vast majority of Windows software is very consistent. Some adjustment was needed when we jumped from XP to Vista, but that was pretty painless. Having guidelines has nothing to do with store fascism. The Metro UI guideliness have been there for more than a year, and even more if you take the guidelines from WP7). It is in fact Linux (exactly like Android) that is lacking in consistency due to crazy amount of different opinions on how shit should look like.

Maybe you mean "consistency" between tablet interface and desktop interface, and for that I would say kindly fuck you sir! Very Happy

The only thing I can see them trying to do with that list about handling critical shut downs might be the scenario where a game crashes and doesn't release the interface. You know how once in a blue moon you get a crash in the game but you can't get out. ctrl alt delete doesn't bring up the taskmanager, you can't tab out, you can see your mouse but the only thing you can do is power down the machine and restart it?

Either way fuck MS.

I'm using Win8, Start8 (Stardock Start button replacement) and it's a pretty nice environment. I don't even have to look at the Fisher Price UI anymore.

I very much appreciate the ridiculously quick startup times, and the OS does seem faster and more streamlined.

Now if only someone would release an Aero Glass injector, or Stardock actually updating WindowBlinds to get rid of the awful theme.

That shouldn't happen when using WinRT, as theoretically, the OS has much higher process priority and the WinRT runtime itself should be able to kill the app. Can't tell you how the whole thing would cope with processes stuck in IO hell, as happens from time to time in current Windows NTs.

Change volume. Open network "popup". Conncet a camera in a USB slot. Insert DVD and wait for autorun menu.

Tell me again how you don't see that UI. Embarassed

This is just the first babysteps in a sequence. We've seen it many times before. It's the first cautious trying steps paving the way into a slippery slope, where the end result is something like MS iTunes. We'll end up in a world where MS can skim their alloted percentage - whatever that may be. I hear Apple takes 30% although you shouldn't hold me to that number.

Of course MS is envious of all the money Apple is skimming into their coffers from other peoples hard work. Of course MS wants to be in the same situation. This is a capitalistic world after all. MS knows that they have to approach this carefully though, but they have a good case seeing as Apple is doing the exact same thing without getting the governments on their case. And Apple isn't a tiny little-brother anymore. They can use Apple as a precedence for doing the exact same thing in the future.

I would have no issues if I knew that the future Windows would remain open. If I knew that the MS iTunes would just be another Steam, Origin or what have you, competing on the same terms as everybody else. But knowing these megacorporations like I do, I have no illusions that they won't try to exploit every way they can to separate me from my money. MS is earning royalties on every title being released on the Xbox. They want the same thing on THEIR OS too.

You can't blame someone for trying, but we need to shut it down in the infancy. Notch is correct. Just fight it before it's even started so MS understand that it won't be easy to implement. This also has the potential to wipe out Steam. I can understand why Valve is fighting this. This is also the reason why I believe Valve is working harder than they're letting us on on a Linux gaming platform. To be honest MS is playing a dangerous game here. They might just be digging their own grave. If I could play my games, surf the web and use some simple OpenOffice tools on Linux I wouldn't really need Windows at all anymore.

We're a minority. Most people buy notebooks and if it comes with Windows 8 installed they will swallow it.
Besides Valve is also a mega corporation so we might be running away from one to another.
Fuck this greedy capitalists.

...wow...I just read through every one of those comments you made haha. The idiots on there are worse than here haha. Let them have Windows 8, I'll be on 7 until they ditch that garbage.

We always go through a transition change with MS Os's. but they're slight. There might be a small amount of controversy with changes but we always adapt. Windows 8? Jeez....it's like a full scale war lol

Here, it's with the idiots who have never tried an Apple product yet troll because they see some funny pic, and anyone who has actually tried the products and tells them that's not the case, is obviously a fanboy/troll.

all this win 8 shitstorm could have been avoided by microshit, if they would have make metro an optional feature on their shit 8 os.
i hope they will get sued again by eu for forcing a desktop user into their marketplace, and pay a fine 10000x more vs the money they got from selling win8. (it may not be such a huge amount)

I try to think back but I don't think I've ever actually bashed an Apple PRODUCT, it's always just been Apple themselves. Sometimes when talking to a client who wants a new computer or something it's hard to be objective for the main fact I hate Apple so much but there's just some things their OS is just better for and that's media editing. Video, music, photography....etc. I'm almost thinking about keeping this Macbook Pro I have sitting here that's without a HDD so I can see if it's more fluid editing my photo's on that than vice versa.

I do give props to iOS, for as outdated the hardware is, being re-used all the time, Android phones having 4 times the power, I've yet to ever see any Android phone run as smooth as iOS does. I had 4gen Itouch, that thing never once slowed down no matter what I did or what I had open.

I'm using Windows 8 as main-OS since the release of the RTM

thats almost 2 months now, i dont feel any difference compared to windows 7. except when i press the windows button, i get a modernized start-menu that's actually more convenient than the old one

its like windows 7 with an extra theme, oh and ofcourse what appears to be faster boot and shutdown times.

the whole appstore thingy seems to be more like an addition that some people might actually use and like, for the rest, it doesn't affect shit.

Does all this W8 certification thingie means that we will have to wait for MS certification on each game updates like in the consoles world then ?
No more beta patch for certified W8 software?
