Hi nfohumpers.

I have bought N76VZ and I have installed Windows 7 64 on it.
I have 2 display adapters in device manager :
Intel HD 4000 and nVidia 650M.

I can't set nVidia 650M as display adapter.

I have installed drivers for 650M (tried both from ASUS (2012.06.14) and nVidia (2012.09.13) web site).

I tried to disable Intel HD 400 adapter. Windows falls back to VGAsafe driver. Tried to disable VGAsave driver, Windows wouldn't boot (although I have windows logo on screen; they would just get stuck or maybe I didn't wait long enough).

How can I force windows to use 650M?
NOTE : I don't want some software to switch between Intel HD 4000 and nVidia 650M. And I don't care about 650M draining battery.
I just want to run 650M all the time.

You have nvidia optimus laptop. If there is no function in BIOS to force only 650M you are fucked. From what I have read the nvidia graphic card is tied to IntelHD. You can't disable the Intel GPU without disabling the nVidia but - that's the best part - you can disable nVidia. Sorry mate.

Wifey had the same issue on her lappy with Optimus -- so if the option in the bios doesn't work, you can simply set it via the nVCPL Smile

So no way to turn on 650M?

Does AMD has something similar to this Optimus crap? If it doesn't I'll change this laptop for an AMD one.

What do you mean "turn on"? It's always "on" it just isn't set to default by, well, default. Set your lappy's power management options to "Max Performance", set nVCPL to use "GT650M" as the default device, hell ... disable Optimus switching in the BIOS (I presume you have it, Asus don't USUALLY lock everything off) and you'll be fine. Is there any particular reason why you don't want the HD4000 enabled at all? If you're playing games or watching movies, it will switch to the 650M anyhow .. the HD4000 is only ever used on really low-power things, such as desktop/Aero and 2D emulators. If it doesn't switch automatically (which can happen sometimes) then simply set nVCPL to use the 650M by default as the "Preferred GPU" or add the .exe of the game/app you're using and set 650M as the GPU there.

As for AMD, no.. Optimus is nV tech so it's not on AMD laptops. There is what's called "Dynamic Switching" though, which pretty much functions the same -- utilising the Sandy/Ivy onboard chip until the power of the dedicated card is needed, then switching to that.

By "turn on" I mean to have it in Screen resolution widow as available display adapter.
Unfortunately, I think N76VZ don't have an option to turn off Optimus in BIOS (maybe I missed it, I'll look again today).
Trouble with Optimus is it doesn't switch on 650M in all cases so I'm stuck with HD 4000 which is incapable of rendering DX11 game at 1920x1080.

So Optimus/Dynamic Switching is Intel tech? Does AMD have a similar tech on their mobile CPUs?

Thanks for the answer, Sabin.

It's strange how the GPU gets stuck in HD4000 mode, but not unheard of... it happened to my missus as well on her Asus N35SV, so the best way around it is to either set nVCPL to "Preferred GPU: 650M" or add individual profiles for game .EXEs and set those.

Dynamic Switching is for AMD A-class CPUs and Intel Ivy/Sandy chips, requiring AMD GPUs. Optimus is for Intel Ivy/Sandy and requires nVidia cards. As far as I remember.
