Just took some time and finally polished my desire z back cover.
It is known to "peel off" and so did mine. so I just took the whole coating off and polished the fuck out of it
its not perfect but it works for me

Thanks to starting with 600grit there are minimal scratches under polish, so it's not really all that smudgy.
