Hey guys!

So I'm saving up some money for a new laptop since the current one is failing me. I'm gonna use it for schoolwork, that is taking notes, browsing etc (you know the "normal stuff). Also watching movies and a good battery time is absolutely preferred as well. The quality of the screen matters as well and a good design is also preferred.

There is also one more thing I want and I want it to be ultra thin as well like the Macbook Air (a bit thicker works as well). Unfortunately I've been looking at the Macbook Air but I felt like I can do a lot better and keep myself to PC. I need to be as cheap as possible since I'm a student but I realize that what I'm asking for isn't gonna come out super-cheap but I wanna press the prize as much as possible. Also screen size should be about 13 inch preferably.

I really appreciate the help which I've gotten here over the years and I really want to avoid getting a Macbook Air even if it seems like it fills all of the requirements, so that's why I'm here. I have no idea on what's good these days so I thought i'd come straight here for advice on what laptops you guys think fit my requirements.

Thanks for your time and help!

Thanks I will check them out. I don't really have a problem with the price of a macbook air (the cheapest ones) plus I get 10% off since i'm a student. However I dont want to buy something that costs as much as the Lenovo X1 carbon. That is just way too much for me.

There are cheaper ultrabooks than MacBook Air out there, and you will do good to read about them and decide if they fulfil your needs. Keep an open mind about the MBA as well, as it is cheaper than some of the ultrabooks.

The Sony and Samsung look more expensive to me ($1599 and $1699, respectively), while MBA is $1199 but comes with less HDD space. Meanwhile, build quality is really good on MBA from personal experience. When I bought my MBA, there weren't many ultrabooks to speak of, but I am yet to see one that is better at that price point. The ASUS one perhaps, but MBA build quality is still better on the MBA, as is screen, keyboard, etc. You say you can "do a lot better" but at what price point? If you are willing to pay, there are better out there, at least from spec standpoint. But at the price range of the MBA, keep an open mind. At worst, you can install Windows on it after purchase. I don't see why, as OS X has Microsoft Office, play videos etc, but if you dislike it, you can always put Windows in there.

He wants a real computer leonid, not a shiny toy Cool Face

But between sony and samsung I'd pull the trigger on the latter.
Saw quite a bit of vaio laptops with a multitude of issues (the last one even was a 13" with a fucked up GPU, RAM and HDD Shocked, but I wouldn't rule out the human factor on that one).

The 10" and 12" Samsung machines that I've seen, on the other hand, were very VERY solid, but I dunno how reliable would be the bigger models.

I've never really tried an Apple computer but I have a feeling that somewhere along the line i'm gonna rage. Are MBA's really worth it? I've always been on the hate apple-bandwagon but I feel like i'm opening up more to their laptops but maybe the slick design is just having to much of an impact on me?

I've also looked some more and Dell XPS 13 seems to be an option as well, what do you guys think about that model?

I'm starting to lean against a MBA which is very scary haha Sad

What do you guys think? The samsung is also looking good.. it's a tough choice

I was mostly (lame-)trolling leo. Failed Troll

Besides he has a point with the "just install win7 on the worst case scenario".

Raz, why would you rage? OS X is an elegant Linux basically; a Linux that just works. It's more complicated than that, but that's an easy way to look at it. It's not that different than Windows once you get used to it. And it sure has much more elegant UI than Windows 8.
If the price suits you, and the tech specs suit you, it's a no brainer to me. Why would you discredit a perfectly good laptop just because of the company's name?

Dell XPS 13 is very nice too, but it's not an ultrabook, so it's much heavier than these. 13z is smaller, but still considerably more bulkier.

toni, this is what happens when you post that crap outside of the usual anti-Apple places. Wink

I don't really know I have an iPad and iPhone and i'm quite happy with the pad but content with the phone. Eitherway you're right I shouldn't discredit the MBA because of the company name. Dell XPS 13 is actually an ultrabook. it weights 0,01 kg more than the MBA and is 1 mm thicker at the thickest point. So it must qualify right?

Ah oops, I mixed it with the 15/15z.

Looks good. The cheapest version is 999$, but they all have a 720p display vs the 1440x900 on the Air.

MBA:
13,3 inch screen
128 GB SSD
1,8 GHz Dual-core intel i5
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3L
Intel HD Graphics 4000

or

Dell XPS 13
13,3 inch screen
256GB SSD-hårddisk
Intel® Core™ i7-2637M processor (4M Cache, 1.7 GHz)
4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333 MHz
Intel HD 3000

I obviously need to take a look at the devices and get a feel for the keyboard and design but it's a tough choice to make. How much is the difference between the two monitors?

But it's like that in ultrabooks too, no buttons. It's a good design, to be honest.

Haha thanks Leo i'll keep that in mind, though i've decided to wait a bit until buying one since something else came up that is straining me financially. hopefully i'll put my hands on the MBA by mid November or by christmas-shopping period. Though I might have to create another thread to evaluate my options again by then since new stuff might have been released Surprised

Anyone used the 13" Zenbook Prime? I respectfully disagree with Leo on the MBA screen being better. The Zenbook one is anti-glare, has a higher resolution and the viewing angles are great. And all reviews I've read praise it as being the better of the two.

That said, I'd love to hear anyone's experience with it.

DarkPassenger could you please link some of those reviews?

Also I've got another question. Should I get my MBA with 8 gigs of RAM or is 4 enough? I'm a bit confused on how much that is needed.

MBA has soldered RAM, so in a long term 8GB is better, especially if you are going to use VMs.

Sure:
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/laptops-and-netbooks/asus-zenbook-prime-ux31a-1085284/review
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/08/a-good-ultrabook-a-great-screen-the-asus-zenbook-prime-ux31a-review/
http://www.pcworld.com/article/260628/asus_zenbook_prime_ux31a_review_ultralight_pretty_and_capable.html

And here is an article comparing the two:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/apple-macbook-air-2012-vs-asus-zenbook-prime-ux31a-the-rematch

I was also considering getting an Air but in the end ordered the Zenbook Smile For me the choice was between Zenbook's superior screen and the Air's great touchpad. Decided the display is more important since I'll be coding a lot on it.

I don't think I have commented on the Zenbook's screen. If the price is right, then sure. How long does battery last?
