Last racing game I've had actually fun with is Gas Guzzlers. Not really what you are looking for though (I think).
PC: Yes. Console: No.

been years since i used the wheel, and I dont drive. iirc you use right foot for both throttle and break is this correct? Using both feet feels really awkward |
Yes, left foot is supposed to be the clutch
Good to hear you like it though, another one joins the club
That said, you should check out Project CARS. Also in development by SMS (the guys behind the Shift games), they're doing it community-funded. Still the same basic engine as Shift 2, but this is more sim. It still retains the same sense of speed as the Shift games though, still the same excitement. There's no campaign and such yet, but they're making good progress with everything else. It looks even better than Shift 2, despite the fact that 80% of the game and its assets aren't done yet

This. It's ridiculously bad and I don't get how some people here on the hump can even tolerate it, let alone like it.

Haven't tried it myself, but according to the feedbacks from "pro" guys it is a solid game indeed. It's basically a very refined rFactor mod, with completely new tracks, cars (obviously), and improved force feedback. The 2012 version is out too, but looks like it hasn't been cracked yet.

If it doesnt have a campaign or fluff yet, does it at least have a decent damage model? I really dont understand how some of these games brand themselves as sims, and have no damage whatsoever, hope this one is different.
also a question about shift, in the original thread theres this:
Not sure if they fixed this in a patch or not (I don't think so), but the really high graphics options are hidden. You need to go to My Documents and in the game's folder there is a graphicsconfig.xml file that needs some editing
Is this still the case?

Yes, pCARS already has a pretty good damage model. It's also still being developed obviously, but what's there is already pretty darn good. Honestly, just play the Shift games first and if you really like them, pCARS is everything they are, but improved.
About the config: haven't had time to play Shift in a while, but yeah, probably. It's just a .ini where you can change (and this is from the top of my head) textures to 5 (from 4), AA to 4 (from 3), terrain and object detail to 5..and probably a few more.

You'll get used to it. Driving a real road car with a foot operated clutch then of course you would use your right foot only for the accelerator and the brake and left foot for the clutch. But Driving a real F1 car or playing a game with only 2 pedals then yes, you would use your left foot for the brake and right foot for the accelerator..just like real F1 drivers do!
It's all about preference though, but at the end of the day 1 foot per pedal makes the most sense.

Without a clutch to operate, using 2 feet is beneficial because you can still have full control over your under-/oversteer without having to heel-toe. I still find driving with a clutch (IRL anyway ) much more fun than an automatic or even tiptronic though, even if just because it adds another layer of control

Nice! I'll try it as soon as possible, I'm really curious to test the new engine made in SimBin. (too bad GTR3 is almost m.i.a.)

well.. sad to say I have returned to grid lol. Shift 2 was marvelous but again the damage is somewhat lacking, its all very visceral but not very *realistic* for a sim. Also some cars handled awesomely, some cars were just unable to keep on the road no matter how much I tried to tune it.
The soft body(ish) damage model of grid is really what does it for me, not alot compares to it(carmageddon 2 damage maybe =P) I'd play the dirt games since theyre prettier and same/better engine, but rally is the one racing discipline I like less than f1 lol. was very very very sad to hear there will be no in cockpit cam for grid. Wish theyd just release a simgame with soft body physics already

Yeah the damage system is probably one of the weakest aspects of the game, though it is kinda weird that you found the handling so hard to tame, since Shift isn't exactly a pure simulation (it's basically a hybrid designed to compete against Forza 4/GT5, and it does its job just fine, resulting in a better experience)..maybe could be that you were using wrong settings for your steering wheel? (just a wild guess )
Perhaps it's just a matter of personal taste, you simply like something more intuitive. You could try TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3 if you haven't already.
