Okay, its just a brainfart but I'm rather curious if this would work, the general idea is to install a cheap ass tracking system in my car, so if it ever gets stolen I can easily find the location of the car and pass this information on to the cops.
So, I was wondering, could I install an iphone(under the passenger seat or somewhere else hidden(connected internally to a battery charger), with a working simcard with signal. Iphone has the option to tell you where your phone is if its hooked up to icloud, I'm wondering if this will work and how accurate it is in spotting the location, does it need to have 3G connection or wifi for that to work, etc.
So, would like to hear from techies out there, how best to accomplish this,

PS : yes I do have an expensive car as I would not ask this for a volkswagen golf or ford escort.

Why an iphone? I bet you could google a bit for a cheaper tracking system chip...

There are lots of good tracking chip's out there that cost much less than an iphone.
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

For a hell of a lot less and with much greater reliability you can just buy a purpose built solution.
And to be frank, I don't see the point in lojacking a S80.

Ah cmon, maybe the car has santimental value too, or is a limited edition full with extras.
And the purposly built solutions are known and easily bypassed.
In Bulgaria, when they steal a car, they carry with them a wireless blocker, that blocks all gps and gsm communications, until they get the car to the safe place, where it's probably a shielded container, in which they take it apart.

some worthwhile advice, thanks, cuz I was checking these aftermarket thingies and most of 'em are sheer ripoff, GPS trackers which require monthly fees to some company. Guess volvo should have a decent system in house, I'll check with them, cheerz! |

Woops, misread, thought you had an Audi 8-series, brain freeze - kind of makes my response to Mchart invalid as well since I'm sure he'd do it on an Audi 
But anyway yeah, Volvo have similar systems available. I'm not up to date with their shit specifically though (don't like Volvo, sorry ), but I'm guessing they use similar alarm classes to VAG - I know Peugeot and Mitsubishi do for example. What I do know is that their electronics are just as easy to circumvent, similar method to VAGCOM (dongle that in Volvo's case sends some reset bytes, rather than modifying settings like with VAGCOM, still same principle though).

Not trying to be a bitch or anything, but I bet 95% of users saying its not a car worth protecting probably can't afford to buy a luxury sedan, Audi is great and all but the only models worth buying are the extremely pricey ones, and even that is a bit out of my league(A8 for starters).

Don't worry Pfiemel, I'd protect a 40+ grand car as well, it's just that Mchart has very different thoughts on cars due to his US background (sorry Mchart, but that's true, our standards are just lower due to the higher average prices  ).
Heck, I've got an alarm on my Golf as well; and I'm required to have one by my insurance company because VAG cars are the #1 target for theft and vandalism here in NL. Particularly if you have an RCD310/510 or RNS310/510 chances are your car will be busted open at some point if it's in an unprotected spot

buddy had an S50 or something hardtop convertible... very nice car.. but BOY are these cars underpowered... anyway another option is boomerang... google em...
either way a decent thief will get around everthing with blockers and such.
and FYI to people saying no point in cheap cars, actually cheap car get stolen in higher numbers around here atleast.

Maybe i'm used to the states and it not costing very much. I guess in Europe the S80 costs a butt fuck ton though due to bullshit reasons. I could likely get a M5 in the states for how much a S80 costs in most of Europe.
Anyways, unless you are driving around a self-insured super car there is no point in these lojack style systems. Again, you have car insurance for a reason.

car insurance is bullshit, they give you the dayprice of what the car is worth on the market, the amount of shit that comes with losing a car is atleast 4000-5000€ more than what they are forking out, is insurance gonna cover the cost of registering it again, what about my after market rims, in the end, etc, you always lose out, atleast thats how it works overhere(unless you take insurance that will cost you an arm and a leg).
And Mchart, your comparison does not hold, you can perhaps get a faster(not saying better)US car for the same amount of money, you sure as hell can't get a relatively new M5 for the same money. And Mad Max, volvo is indeed underpowered, but if you look at their engines you also know that with simple chip tuning you can add 100Hp without even putting a strain on the engine, they'r underpowered for a reason, its volvo, its about safety and longevity, still, I'm happy with my 200+Hp, its more than enough.

@Intel_Nvidia, its a pretty fuel economical car, I can drive 1000km on a 60l tank, so its very doable, just don't press the gas pedal down too much:) And the main reason I am getting anxious is cuz of people moving into our neighbourhood, don't mean to be racist or generalizing, but when polish people move in, stuff usually starts dissapearing very soon, happened in my former town as well, polish moved in, 3 placed robbed, one home had 2 old people, wife they had strapped with tieraps, the old man(72 years) was knocked into a stupor, face beaten to a pulp just for the location of the family jewels. Nothing against polish people but many come to our country with bad intentions. So yeah, stuff gets stolen kumkss.
