well gta came like 4 years ago so the fact that you're still comparing SD to it is a merit for
GTA4 Smile

and GTA4 is till better imo

That's because GTA, regardless of version, is usually held up as the benchmark for open world story-based titles. Hell... aside from Body Harvest (another DMA title) it was GTA that pretty much put this genre on the map. So yeah... games inevitable get compared and since GTA4, in particular, is so beloved - then that's what I compare it to Smile

However, I'm leaning more towards Sleeping Dogs. The whole package just felt better.

Aaaand on topic; I finally finished the game Very Happy Steam says 40hrs but in-game full play is 25hrs. MAGNIFICENT game through and through, I'm feeling quite hard pushed whether or not that it's better than GTA4 --- the music, the combat, the style, all great. Loved it!

... just a shame the missions were so disjointed, they left me with a feeling that a significant portion of content was randomly cut or dropped from the game Sad

Ya but you have to admit:

Did you who have finished the game use those triad/police outfits to max out your xp gains? If you didn't, did you manage to get all the skills in the different skill trees?

@inz

I didn't use either outfit, ended up maxing Police WAAAAAY before the end. Strangely, I'm about a third of an XP bar off from maxing Triad though.

@SpykeZ

Yeah man, totally. The game is so satisfying in its combat, everything has weight and the Shenmue-esque street fighting actually made me actively seek out combat at every opportunity, it felt so good. Very, very good game. What few cons it has pale in the epically white light of the pros Very Happy

I maxed police and almost maxed triad without wearing the outfits.

So I've started playing ISO demo, and maybe it's because it's the ISO demo, but so far there's two big things putting me off buying it. Haters gonna hate, here goes:

The mouse. I'm sorry but what the fuck is this shit? This is not even bad porting, this is just fucking mouse control up on purpose; sensitivity in vehicles is 100 times higher, on foot it barely does anything. SpykeZ said they patched it, but considering I'm on 1.4 I'd assume it's in one of these patches? Going to give it a go with the 360 pad anyway.

The driving model. Now, I know I'm an ass when it comes to racing games, I'll take every opportunity to drive crap like Split Second, Burnout and recent NFS games into the ground. However, a game like this should not be as bad as those - yet it is, quite possibly even worse. GTA4's handling I liked, because you could actually control the car; in this one it's like driving a fucking go-kart :/

On the other hand, the fighting system is actually very good; it could be a little more responsive, but it's very good nonetheless. The story so far seems good as well and it's extremely well presented. The game itself isn't bad to look at either and the parkour stuff is a nice addition.

That driving model is pissing me off though, really is. It's actually painful to look at as well, because with the keyboard the camera jerks around every time you steer the tiniest bit. No, that part is something they really should've copied from GTA4 :/

Edit: also had to unplug my goddamn joystick, because the game gets confused; I could use the buttons on the 360 pad just fine, but for movement it decided to use the joystick ?!

I guess that's why the gamepad hate needs to die a painful death Razz SOME games work best on gamepads and this is one of them, I've had no issues with responsiveness in the fighting (everything is fluid and immediate) and the driving feels really nice too - though I admit it's far from perfect. I tried playing with the keyboard and mouse and it felt horrible, which is such a shame in contrast to the rest of the port which was really good Sad The only time I use the mouse is for prolonged shootouts.

It works very good with a gamepad. Arcadey, but satisfying. Depends on the car though, some are hard to handle.

Driving is atrocious in this game, there is no denying it. It's as though there is only 8 directions in which I can drive and flicking the thumb stick in any direction "jumps" over to next predefined direction, it's far from fluid.

However, I am thoroughly enjoying most other aspects of the game at the moment.

None of that happens here Neutral It's most certainly fluid and, as mister_s said, some cars handle better than others. The "SMART" car, and the weaker mopeds and scooters, handle too sharply but others are really smooth.

@inz

Nope, I enjoyed it too - it wasn't perfect but it was still absolutely fine and I'm going go ahead and say I prefer it far more than the SS GTA IV Boatathon controls, where every car wallows across the road like damned schooners grinhurt

Oh btw., do you get face experience from doing those races, or is it just cash rewards? I've been stalling into getting those, mainly because I keep losing all my money gambling so I've no money to actually afford any of the decent vehicles. Stupid fixed cock fights. Sad

Just do car hijacking. You'll eventually start hijacking cars worth like 300K

The car jacking ends sooner or later though. Only thing that can be repeated ad infinitum is the Knox Transporter highjacking and it barely nets more than 50k. It also gets harder to get rid of the police, so its best to just drive home, park the car in front, go inside and wait for the shit to cool down. Stupid system.
Nevertheless I ended up with over 2 million $ plus at the end, despite buying absolutely everything. Around 500k of the money is DLC though and I won another 100k in gambling.
But even if you lose in gambling and have no DLC there should be roughly 1 million left at the end if you play completionist.

interesting fact: jackie ma is voiced by edison chen, who starred in infernal affairs, a movie this game is inspired by (and remade by scorcese as the departed, although i personally find the original movie better overall - i recommend it to everyone who hasnt seen it).

Driving is kinda childish and simplistic when compared to Grand Theft Auto, to name an example, but it doesn't bother me at all. For me the game isn't centered around driving and that's a good thing. I'm really enjoying nearly every aspect of the game (except maybe the camera) Very Happy

Oh, and I'd love if it were possible to slow down the day/night cycle to half at least.

Camera management is awful, it's responsible for half my deaths during fights.
Mouse sensitivity while driving is pretty bad too.
Fixing those would make this game really good, but right now GTA is above for me.

I'm playing with my Logitech gamepad by the way. It's been excellent so long for every aspect of the game (specially the fights), driving works great with it too. I only started with the shooting in my last session and of course it doesn't stand a chance against kb/m but at least it's not too hard and apparently not needed too often.

This game is better than GTA4, you don't even use a gun it's all hand&leg fighting which is awesome and rivals Batman. Mission variety is much better and that was GTA4 weak point, every mission was the same, come, shoot, maybe scripted car chase, repeat, here you can sneak and plant a bug, pick a lock, this already is more variety than last GTA which was a step down from San Andreas in everything except for the technical side (graphics).

Comparing Sleeping dogs to more than four years old game... Wait for spring 2013 and then come back and tell us which is better Sleeping dogs or GTA V.

San Andreas was third game on same engine... do you remember GTA III?

I enjoyed GTA IV more than Sleeping dogs... Own both games since day one. I was happy and satisfied when I finished GTA IV (took 50-60 hours - 100% save, story 20-24 hours), but after beating Sleeping dogs I am upset. Story was way too short (under 10 hours), cars handling sucks donkey balls, and I cant see your so called variability.
