If there's any Blur filter in options, also make sure to disable it:

Emulated mouse that feels like you're controlling an analog stick with a mouse. Worst mouse control ever.

Um... this is probably a stupid question but how do I play this with a 360 gamepad? I plugged my wired 360 controller into my PC and it shows up in the Control Panel, but when I launch Dark Souls only the M&K respond to input. And in the menu I only see M&K options, nothing for a controller???

Seems people are having that issue. It's not a big deal though, the messages are mostly "HURRDUR TRAP AHEAD OH MY GOSH" after the first few tutorial messages.
Oh, and the "tutorial" messages are just controls if I remember correct. |
Yeah I'm having that problem as well, it will get fixed soon I guess.  |

The tutorials don't tell you how to beat him, so just try this;
Lock on. Press the R3 button (fucked if I know the keyboard key), that allows easier rolling and dodging to avoid his blows. Circle button (^^) is for dodging, tap it without a direction to hop backwards, hold a direction and press circle to roll/dodge. Left bumper is Block, left trigger is parry - tap when the enemy strikes to parry attacks. Right bumper is light/quick attack, right trigger is strong attacks. Follow up a parry with an immediate Light attack for a counter. Dpad selects items and/or switches which equip you have in your hands. Y button switches from holding the weapon in one hand + shield, to holding it in 2 hands for stronger attacks. X is for using your selected items, A is for interacting with the world.
Lock on the boss and stay back, study his attack patterns, dodge constantly and follow up with a flurry of blows. When he jumps in the air, roll back out of the way and try to get behind him after he lands.
I was surprised how incredibly easy the first boss was, especially considering the first boss in Demon's Souls is mercilessly difficult. Oh! And one more thing; as soon as you run into the room with the boss? Keep running and heading towards the left-hand wall with all the pots/urns, there's a gate that opens when you enter the room .. head through it BEFORE taking on the boss, that way you can get your sword/shield/etc before fighting him.

Mine was and I don't even HAVE a 360 pad, just my PS3 one with the 360 Driver from MIJ. It just.. well.. works.
