The Expendables 2 - 2/10
I should have known after the disaster that was the first film, but holy shit this was even worse. Doesn't even come close to the idiotic charm of the 80s "golden era" action epics it tries to evoke, and instead looks more like a vanity project for a bunch of past it OAPs. Zero laughs, boring action, no plot (despite the highly original weapons grade plutonium macguffin) and even though it's supposedly being played for laughs, it takes itself way too seriously.
Thank God TCITW was waiting for me when I got home...
The Cabin In The Woods - 8/10
Genuinely fun with more than its fair share of laughs, an original take on the horror genre and filmmakers that know how to stage an exciting set-piece. Surprisingly good effects, too! Studios, more money for Drew Goddard pls!

I can't believe what i'm seeing. So many liked the terrible teenage horror part of the movie and less fond of the original part of the movie which stands out from all the other horror movies out there. I loved the last part and wanted to turn off the movie the first part. I also hated that the movie stopped once it became REALLY interesting. Would be cool to see some scenes of the demon or god, whatever ruin cities and such for a few minutes.

It breaks down the genre and for you to recognize that its indeed the horror genre it needs to have the generic content at the beginning. And I mean its not that generic it's clear they are tampering with the kids to abide the "rules" and I thought that was brilliant. Also the hand wasn't good enough?

Cabin in the Woods 5/10
Whedon needs to focus on his jokes and stick to shallow crap, as it works much better for him - as is evidenced in The Avengers.

I think it was an ok build up, it also made the second half less expected.. Obviously like many movies the build up wasnt as interesting as the conclusion / the second half of the movie.

Gods are much better imagined than seeing some bearded giant or something, that never works and they knew it. It ended exactly where it should have ended.
Overall, about 55 mins horror/comedy with a rather unique twist and 40 mins which becomes a lot more interesting than the first part... Horror movies are usually a LOT worse than this, i'd love to know what you're comparing to in the genre.

You think I didn't know that?
He's good at shallow pop-culture crap (obviously, it's not crap if you like it) - but he absolutely sucks at making movies or shows I can take seriously.
I expect to take a horror movie seriously, and this movie failed utterly in every way.
Don't get me wrong, I really liked The Avengers - but it's just a popcorn movie.
I also really liked Firefly - but it's still nothing but well-crafted pop-culture fluff.
Whedon is a master of not taking the material seriously - and he's great at jokes and giving you the unexpected. That's as far as his talent goes, however.

What's wrong with popcorn movies? You see them for some brainded action / story and when you're prepared for it its a really fun ride. Watching The Avengers or Cabin in the Woods expecting Oscar material or some deep drama? I mean that's laughable and no wonder it will leave you very disapointed.

There's nothing wrong with popcorn movies, I just don't think as much of them as you do.
I didn't expect oscar material or "deep drama" - but I did expect horror, and I didn't get that.
If you think that's laughable, fine, but there it is.

I guess i didn't expect it to be absolutetly terrifying just because it happened to be a horror movie. If you're familiar with the genre you also know there's a lot of different types of horror.

Is there some reason you insist on these strawman statements?
Did I say I expected to be "absolutely terrified"?
No, I said I expected horror. To me, that means I expected to be frightened and excited to SOME degree.
I felt nothing like that.
You liked the movie, and I can easily handle that. Why is it such a big deal that I didn't?

How did you come to the conclusion it's a "big deal" to me? I dont care dude, just saying why it's possible to ruin a perfectly good movie with the wrong expectations..

Serious 2/10 for Expendables and 8/10 for the Cabin in the woods and u call Cabin in the woods a "an original take on the horror genre" , what is original about this movie ?
Horny blonde dies first , well they always die first in these B type of horror movies .
Bad guys in cubes , damm where did i ever seen that.
A stoner that is imune to mind controling smoke???
They manage to put an invisible wall but cant detonate some damm explosives , must have been a budget cut no money for good wires.
Calling the Cabin in the woods horror , please , its simply a B movie (bad acting , bad script , bad waste of money.

You didn't catch the fact that CITW is a pastiche and a tribute to the horror movies. They die in that particular order because that's one of the rules of horror movies - slut dies first virgin survives. The house is similar to the house from Evil Dead 2. There are monsters in the cages from other horror movies and the cells themselves are a tribute to the Cube.

It's not like they were familiar with it from the begining. I mean if the movie didn't play tribute to horror and what not... and took it self seriously as a horror movie then it would be a pretty bad movie. But the main saving factor for it is that it plays with horror to loling at horror and other horror movies. so \o/. Still, they beat the background story into your skull to the point where it starts to take it self serious and it just ruins it for me. It was epic until they ruined it. There was no need for any of that stupid shit in the end.
It's like loling at horror genre was funny. the cliches were funny. the set ups based around horror movies were funny. But when they did their own humour set around their concept. It got less and less funny.
and it's not an original take on the horror genre. come on. evil dead 1 and 2 were original takes at horror. Both funny, both original, and both blood curdling scary. Shaun of the dead. Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Severance. Feast. and even slither. This movie just had a unique concept which was ruined by the creators going too much into it to show off how much thought they put into it.

It's original because it takes so many things from the horror genre and essentially mocks it. I'm afraid you missed the point of the movie and maybe took it a bit too seriously. I mean it's a movie where they
Spoiler: | actually pump drugs in the air that make people dumber, just so the dude would act like a typical alpha male (like in most horrors), and girls act like a dumb horny blonde. The drug also forces them to split up (another typical horror trait), and i could go on.

How do you take that seriously. More than that, how can you call that un-original. It's original because no other movie has that take on the genre. I can understand not enjoying that concept, but calling it not original is just not true.

How about calling them derps since they missed a simple enough detail on the movie, which was what I quoted?
